Thanks for your help, Hewkii9. My son asked for the small chess set for Christmas cause he wants the minifigs, but when I started researching it, the Giant Chess looked more interesting. Don't know if he's even aware of the Giant Chess, and the smaller one's certainly more affordable; but I thought if the Giant chess had the figures he wants from the small one, it would be a great surprise.

Personnaly, if I was your son, I would be a lot happier with the Giant chess set, I only have the standard one (received as a gift for graduation), and although I was very happy to get it, I wanted to have had the Giant set when I checked Lego.com for information (and the price :sweet: ) of the small set.

Also the royal knight battle pack could be a nice gift/addition.

I'd definantly agree with that statement.

Since they're both chess sets they both have the same number of people, but the Giant Castle Chess Set has trolls and dwarves, but not many skeletons or knights. The smaller one has quite a large amount of knights and skeletons but not one dwarf or troll.

If your son likes just playing with the figures, then I'd recommend a small set like the 7040 Dwarve's Mine Defender and the small chess set. If your son likes building buildings and building the set, then I think that the Big Chess Set would be better for him.

Hope this might help.

He loves building the sets and playing with the figures, so this is a tough choice. Thanks to everyone - your comments & suggestions are very helpful!!

The smaller chess set 852001 is currently on sale (S@H)!

So it´s 24,99 € vs. 199,- €.

(no doubt what I would buy - come on: 199€ for children is insane!)

Where is it on sale for that price?

Like I wrote: S@H - meaning "Shop@Home", the official Lego website.
