Bricks0937 Posted October 10, 2008 Posted October 10, 2008 Hello everyone. I was looking through old posts trying to find a picture of the preliminary troll impulse set, the one where the troll had armor and couldn't find any pics. I was wondering if anyone still has a picture. I searched brickshelf and didn't come across any. If anyone could help, it would be great. Quote
hewkii9 Posted October 10, 2008 Posted October 10, 2008 You mean this? It was released. I don't think there were any troll with armor impulses... Quote
Hinckley Posted October 11, 2008 Posted October 11, 2008 I believe he means the preliminary set. It had shoulder armor. I'll take a look for it... Quote
Derek Posted October 11, 2008 Posted October 11, 2008 I wished they kept the armor, and the bronze sword. The pearl grey seems cheap... Quote
Darth_Legois Posted October 11, 2008 Posted October 11, 2008 The only place Ive seen this is at a TRU in Taiwan...But I didnt get any because it just sucks I agree they shouldve kept the should armour thingy Quote
WhiteFang Posted October 11, 2008 Posted October 11, 2008 Found it. I was about to place the link and you have done it. Thanks. I must agreed that this version is much better than the current version. Read the reviews for comparison. Quote
Bricks0937 Posted October 11, 2008 Author Posted October 11, 2008 Thanks guys. I couldn't remember if the cart thing was different in the prelim. Seems its the same, but they switched out the crossbow for a wonderful flick fire and took away his armor. Quote
Zorro Posted October 11, 2008 Posted October 11, 2008 Thanks guys. I couldn't remember if the cart thing was different in the prelim. I would have liked it better when the ORC (a troll is something totally different, but then again TLC don't seem to have read Tolkien so...) would have gotten an armor, as well as weapon or 2-3 (a sword,a club and a crossbow), but I guess we will have to do it with this set. Just like we need an entire artillery division of Orcs...I will rather buy more Orc "wenshes", those are soo cool (I mean the Orc Queen). Quote
WhiteFang Posted October 11, 2008 Posted October 11, 2008 IMHO, I think the prelim set work well for me, due to its useful uncommon armor and crossbow, unlike changing it to a regular orc soldier with a flick fire missile feature. This is a review which I had done earlier and explained why I don't like the flick fire missile feature. Quote

I think that LEGO was probably relying more on folklore than upon Tolkien. In different European folklores, there were two types of trolls: the giant ones which also appear in Tolkien, and the more human-sized ones. Usually, when a culture had both creatures in its mythos, the larger variety was referred to as an "ogre." Plus, Tolkien's Orcs didn't have green skin. Quote
Sandy Posted April 7, 2009 Posted April 7, 2009 I think that LEGO was probably relying more on folklore than upon Tolkien. Usually, when a culture had both creatures in its mythos, the larger variety was referred to as an "ogre." Actually, ogres are a variant of giants, at least in folklore. They're taller than humans and also man-eaters. Trolls on the other hand can be defined in quite a many ways depending on the culture, as you said. In Nordic folklore (LEGO is a Danish company, after all), trolls are about human-sized, hairy creatures that dwell in dark caves and forests. So yeah, the LEGO variant looks more like an orc, but since TLG calls them trolls, that's their official name. Plus, Tolkien's Orcs didn't have green skin. The Dungeons & Dragons version of orcs do have green skin, and they're the version that most fantasy products use as a source. Tolkien came up with the name, though. Quote
captaincreek Posted April 14, 2009 Posted April 14, 2009 Thanks for finding, it. A very interesting preliminary photo. Quote
