Cool idea for a topic  .

I think the first time I met with lego is way back in 2003. I remember I was in my vacations with my family in Las Vegas and I am young in that time like 9 or 10 years old. One day we went to the forums mall in the Ceasar Palace hotel and after some walking I found me inside the FAO Swatchards (Correct spelling  ) and then I started to walk into the store. I spended some time in seeing everything but then I arrived at the lego section. There was a bunch of Bionicle and some others but the set that really caught my attention was the MINI Anakin podracer and Sebulba podracer set. It was small so I convinced my mom to buy it for me. When I arrive at our hotel I just throw all the parts in the rug and started building it. Then a few minutes later I found me swooshing both pods all around the room. In our way back home we stopped at Phoenix, Az. The next day after we arrived I found a KB toys and found the old 7126 TIE Fighter set so I bought it. Then nearer to my home we stopped again but this time at a TRU and when I run out of the store I found me carrying a TRU bag with all the MINIs second wave. And well since then I start collecting lego and then well you know I just continue buying my great lego  .

My parents are responsible for my involvement in LEGO we didn't have TV until I was 7, so I didn't see commercials for it. Also, money was very tight then, but my folks must have made the decision that LEGO was something worth investing in because I received LEGO a couple times a year even when we were making financial sacrifices in other areas. My folks skipped Duplo and started me on system LEGO when I was 3 or 4 years old.

I got my first set, a 6503 Sprint Racer, in 1987 or 1988 when I was 1. My parents can't remember what circumstances it came under. It was probably just an impulse buy, especially since I liked cars in general and was big into die cast cars back then too.

Nice topic.

There's a picture of me taken a few months before I turned three holding a green Duplo brick up to the camera, so it's fair to say I already was playing with Lego at that age. I can narrow down the date at which the photograph was taken to within a few days, because it was taken when we were celebrating my older sister's birthday. I don't really know when it started, but my older sister had Duplo before I did, so I reckon I got to know LEGO through her. I'm also pretty sure that my parents bought it for us. What attracted me to it then and what I think is the greatest thing about LEGO is that you can pretty much make whatever you like with it.

Cheers,

Ralph

I saw Lewa Nuva in a toy aisle when I was around 7, my parents got me the Akamai pack of Toa for Christmas, I liked Bionicle. Then, in 2005, I was looking through a catalog and saw Vikings. I liked System.

Yeah - I've been playing with it and building for as long as I can remember. Mostly Police (mine), Fire (brother's), and Castle (both of ours...).

As an aside, the SW sets in '99(?) are what actually brought me out of the "Dark Ages".

I'm not certain, but I think I got my first Lego sets (Basic) around 1983 or so, when I was 4 years old. I very much doubt that Lego was available in Yugoslavia at that time, so I imagine my mom must have brought it from one of her trips abroad. I know I was hooked instantly, and continued to receive new sets until 1991 or 1992. That's when my "Dark Ages" started, I guess, and I didn't buy anything new until this year. I somehow mysteriously ended up with set 6431 from 1998 in my collection... I have no idea how it got there, my best guess is that I saw it at an airport duty-free shop somewhere during 1998 or 1999 and bought it for old times' sake. Anyhow, I am quite glad my childhood collection survived pretty much intact (I did not lose a single brick - amazing - although a few pieces were broken or miscolored when I pulled them out a couple of months ago). I placed my other hobbies on the back burner for the time being and I'm focusing on Lego now.

I just seemed to like it as I slowly grew up as an alternative to junky plastic toys, mentioning no names.

I just seemed to love it so much that I still collect a few sets now :classic:

My bro  s Lego too.

As far I can remember this was my first set:

I still have this set complete.

It was back in 1983, when I was 5 years old, after that I received a lot of town set, then space sets, back with town for a few years, then as many their where some years that I stop buying Legos (Dark ages) and then when I was around 23 years old I get back to Lego with the Williams Formula 1 technic car.

Right now I have buy a lot of sets including castle, Star Wars, city, western and technic.

My parents used to by LEGO for my older brother and I guess I started to play with it soon after I was born I think when I was living in Singapore (that's where I was born). My first set that was my own was 4221. The set came with an awesome minifig with a dolphin printed on his torso. I still have the minifig to date and have found all the parts for the set thanks to peeron.

Nice topic idea, very interesting stories so far.

For me, it all started with a Star Wars set, when I was six or so. One of the first, the Jedi Duel, with Darth Maul and Qui-Gon Jinn with a little tower. It was given to me by a good family friend who was babysitting me at the time. I remember building it with her nephew, and always dropping the pieces. :cry_happy: But before or after that set, I'm not sure when, the green "Swamp" Technic Robo Rider came into my possession, but I forget how... anyways, these two sets got me interested in Lego, and I soon got a few other sets. Unfortunately, that didn't last long, and I bought Bionicle instead. I collected every color/ type of Toa up until Bionicle went goofy in 2004 (IMO). I entered a dark age for about two years, but then got back in in 2006, with Revenge of the Sith sets, including Anakin's JSF, ARC-170, and TIE Interceptor. I was kind of on off after that. But one day in Summer '07, I decided to revisit the Lego aisle, and was instantly brought back to Lego after seeing the Clone Battle Pack. I bought both that and the CIS BP that day, and became interested in Lego news. I started with MOCpages and Brickset for news, and often heard of "Eurobricks". And now here I am, enjoying Lego once again. :cry_happy:

Thisset, 6034 Monarch's Ghost started it all for me. My parents got it for me twice, and I lost the ghost twice. :sceptic: This was the set that introduced me to the modular potential of the mini-figure. From the sword and armour of the Knight, to his helmet's plume and finally the glow-in-the-dark shroud of the creepy ghost. I love this set to bits... I just might have to buy another one on bricklink. :classic:

However Star Wars is what sustained and cemented my passion for LEGO. I was immediately hooked on the rebel helmets from the 1999 snowspeeder.

Oh, this will be good =P

I actually got hooked on Lego in 1997, when I was 4. You see, at that age (I had JUST turned 4, mind), my mom was having trouble potty training me. One day she told me she had a toy, and if I "used the potty", I could have it. That did it - no more trouble with it, and I got a shiny new toy - a bright blue bucket of lego. From then on I was hooked; and I remember getting tons of sets. I seem to recall that the Adventurers sets were my favorite - Johnny Thunder was a childhood hero of mine =D

I wasn't a very strong kid, so the first couple of times I got Roboriders/Throwbots (some of my favorite sets back then; though I loved other kinds too), I actually had to ask for help putting them together =P Other than that, though, the instructions were easy to follow - and yet I still have to build for my 6-year-old brother =P

That's pretty much it for what got me into it; but if you really want to get into it, I got into them twice. Around late 2003 or so, I had my "dark ages" - simply put I had another, more important hobby - video games. (I since have learned to do both equally XD) This culminated in me GIVING AWAY a box of lego that weighed about 50 pounds and was full of old Star Wars, Bionicle, Adventurers, Western, and anything else you could think of...

This lasted a few years, until 06, when I saw the Piraka in a store and just grabbed one on an impulse buy. When I got home I built it, and I was hooked again - though, I was hooked on Bionicle rather than normal lego. That branched out into Exo-Force, and now I'm back to system, trying to rekindle my childhood. Currently my favorite themes are those I didn't get to experience - Pirates (the only pirates set I've ever had was one with King Kahuka in it...) and Star Wars (I didn't see Episode 2, and still haven't actually, so I only bought OT and Ep. 1 sets - and when Episode 2 became the main movie for a while, I just stopped buying them =P)

Whew, long post! I think I went a bit too into detail there...=P Oh well - lord I was born a ramblin' man!

My parents took advantage of a promo offer with Ready Brek for two small Lego sets, a Pirate raft and a Castle Catapult. I was pretty young at the time, about 2 probably, so they saved them for a while and gave them to me. Sadly, they didn't keep either the boxes or the instructions. But that was the start, and I've never looked back. And now here I am 14-15 years later, turning 18, still going strong.

I love topics like this one. It's really interesting to learn more about how individuals started building/collecting Lego.

My start was probably a gift during the mid 70s.

I remember a few Basic sets very well including this one:

0190-1.jpg

Basic Farm Set 190 released in 1974

I'm not sure that it was my first set, but definately one of the earliest.

Other sets that came a few years later included the Brick Yard and the Steam Shovel. Both sets paved the way to building a Lego Town that was really the start of my serious Lego collection. I'm very lucky to still have some of these sets that I reviewed over the past few months.

The Yellow Castle and a few other sets I got from my father when I was 4 or 5 years old (I don't remember my exact age, so I am guessing).

After that I got a Lego set from my parents every year with my birthday, christmas, easter,...

Soon also my grandparents and uncles began to cave in for my "polite requests" (I'm referring to my continuous whining), and I started saving up money for buying sets myself. I mostly got Castle, Pirates and City themes. My twin brother chose Space, Trains and Technic (and Belville at a time, but if he reads this he will kick my megablocks !)

I always saved for the larger Pirates sets like the Imperial Trading Post and the Skulls Eye Schooner, as well as the sets with a lot of minifigs (Sea Mates and such).

Now I regret I didn't buy more of these minifig sets...(Why you ask? Just take a peak at Bricklink for their prices ! :sadnew: )

Very good idea for a topic! This had really gotten me thinking, although it ended up in depression because I truly cannot remember the first set I had. :[ When I was really little, my parents didn't buy me Duplo, they bought me System, even though I was under the age for it. I didn't really build with the instructions then, just dumped the pieces from the box into a big container so I could make something of my own. Kind of upsetting when you think about it. I truly don't remember what age it was that I had begun playing and building with LEGO, but I've been doing so consistantly all of these years.

I can remember my mom coming into my room and stepping on pieces and yelling at me to clean them up. Then one day she couldn't stand it anymore, and bagged them all up and threw them away! Horrible times. My mom always said, some day you'll outgrow these. Well, I'm in my third year of college now, and I love LEGO more than ever.

I had many of the Space sets from the mid to late 80s when I was younger. Before then I had a few sets, but got into them a lot in the later 80s. The fad lasted through Jr High for me and then was over. It wasnt until this years Olympics that I saw someone had duplicated the major venues of the Olympics. At that point I got a set and let the kids play with it. They liked them and was a good time for us as a family. I have always like model railroads and at many a train show saw lego layouts and was always impressed. We are planning a layout of our own and at this point have been basically buying City sets.

Looking forward to doing a couple larger MOC's but until then we are content on sets. I have a pair of 6 year olds and the boy likes to build his own stuff, and the girl likes to follow instructions. Best of both worlds I guess !!!

Great topic by the way.
