Servertijd Posted July 4 Posted July 4 Can we sneak in side quests freebuilds? If not, then this can be deleted :). orginally created for the Summer Joust, but I can Imagine there are different Clans/Guilds in a region like Avalonia.(with different colors and banners) Long ago, in a kingdom worn by war, there lived a young nobleman who was sent to battle in the name of his father. For many years he rode across distant lands, through ruined villages, broken roads and fields marked by conflict. He fought in many battles, and with each victory came a heavy cost. Many brave men fell beside him, men who had once served under his command, but who had long since become his trusted friends. Through courage, loyalty and sacrifice, the young nobleman helped bring much of the kingdom back under the safety of the crown. Yet after all the hardship he had endured, there was only one place his heart truly longed to see again. At last, he returned to the old gate of his home. It was a place he had never forgotten. Each spring, the dark green hedge beside the entrance would bloom with large yellow flowers, filling the path with colour and life. To the young nobleman, that gate had always stood as a symbol of peace, warmth and the comfort of home. There, beneath the weathered stone arch, his father stood waiting. Proud and silent, he watched his son approach. No words were needed. After years of war, loss and duty, the young nobleman had finally returned home. Quote
Ellohan Landskappet Posted July 5 Posted July 5 Wow! This is so powerful! I'm new here but I've been following GoH for a while, and one of the things I've loved about it are the powerful storytellers that dwell in this subforum. Your story is so evocative! It has elements of the story of the prodigal son, except that the son has been away fulfilling his duty instead of shirking it ;) I know that this is a one-off because of Summer Joust, but I think it would be really interesting to continue this story. Perhaps a series of vignettes (in the literature sense) portraying how the son deals with finally coming home? How does he feel now that he is surrounded by peaceful scenery after years of war and loss--bitter? Grateful? Or is he angry with his father for keeping him from for so long? Regardless if you leave this storyline alone or not, I really liked it. As for the build, I loved that you've given a common color accent to the entire thing--the filling in between the stones in the street, the accents in the stonework of the walls, the roof to the left, and the top flag all look to be similar colors, and they help to keep the build grounded in the common setting. I like the small mushrooms dotted underneath the tree :) And the father looks suitably proud. Just two things I'm wondering about: often gatehouses had murder holes and arrow slits along the interior walls to stop any potential attackers. Honestly, I have no idea how one would accomplish this, but it would be a really neat detail if you had included that. Also, do you think it would be more impactful if the father was alone to greet the son's return? It would be less realistic, of course, but that's just a thought I had. Anyway, excellent job, and I can only hope to attain your level of skill. Quote
LEGO Train 12 Volts Posted July 5 Posted July 5 The pathway is simply amazing ...I love it! The vegetation is incredible and the castle, built with plates rather than bricks, is of a superior quality! Quote
Daiman Posted July 5 Posted July 5 Just love, love, love the stonework. Sure wish I had access to that amount of parts to experiment even a little bit... Quote

We love extra storylines in the Guilds of course! Add to that your spectacular builds and no one is complaining! Your build is really fantastic. It's a work of art. I love how you keep the whole picture Lego, apart from the sky, and even the sky has rooflines and trees peeking over the wall to give everything a more realistic appearance. You have a great level of detail on the walls with the many plates without going crazy on greebling and making it look messy. I love your large stone/plate/tile etc road. The colors are great and the technique looks fantastic. The oblique angle of the picture make it understated, but it looks fantastic. I love your trees. The shape is great, and you have a nice dense outer canopy that is very organic. Not to be outdone are the vines, which are probably some of the most realistic I have seen. The combo of the red falcon body with the new scale mail legs is great, and I love seeing that detailed Tudor behind the figs in the open gate. Someone else pointed out that the design of the gate (and the inclusion of so much foliage and a small guard structure next to the wall) is not the most defensible from a military perspective, I would argue that the prosperity of this area due to the architecture, vines growing on the walls etc. suggests that this is not a heavily war torn area, and such features like the guard house, would be more likely for commerce than purely tactical. Along with the great build, we get a wonderful story with a lot of open plot to go where you want, making this whole build exquisite. Good to see you posting again! We hope to see more of you around this summer! Quote

And what a beauty, I know I commented on Flickr but I can't resist commenting again. Great textures, such a cool road/path. I love seeing these closer photos too, get a better look at some of those buildings in the back. You certainly didn't skimp, they look great too. A really pleasant scene, fantastic work. Quote
JamesBuildsBrix Posted July 10 Posted July 10 Wow this is an excellent build. I love all of it. The road has so much detail, all of the flora! Everything going on in the background, there is so much to take in. This is truly some quality work. Quote
Seagull King of Vaughan Posted July 16 Posted July 16 This is a lovely build! You do foliage so well, and the stonework compliments it nicely. Love the peek at the town behind the gate! Quote
Servertijd Posted July 16 Author Posted July 16 Thanks all for the kind words! As for the defensive part of the build, . I saw it as the entrance to a peaceful and prosperous area, where the gate serves commerce and daily life more than military defence :). Quote
Ben S Posted July 16 Posted July 16 This is truly an awesome build! You created a whole atmosphere here. The amount of detail is also impressive, even in the background. I really like the house back there. Quote
