Khorne Posted 3 hours ago Posted 3 hours ago The King's messengers had been sent all over the realms to announce the news of the Great Royal Joust. While it was to be a time of festivity, sports and joy, king Raul of Mardier nevertheless gazed solemnly over the fair grounds, up from the grandstand that had been erected in anticipation of the games. Looking increasingly gaunt after the passing of his late wife, Queen Isabella, the King had sought refuge in the Faith and lived a hermit's life. At the behest of some close in his inner circle, he had been persuaded to host the joust and venture outside once more and mingle with the other nobles of the kingdoms. In dedication of Queen Isabella and to foster the relatively semi-stable peace across the nations, King Raul hoped to see many flock to Londa and answer the call of the Great Joust. Welcome to A Knight's Tale! Perhaps the epic tale of how your knight jousted their way to the first place. For those familiar with Brethren of the Brick Seas, this event will be run somewhat akin to the Football Tournaments. There are three categories in total, in which you can participate as you please. In order to effectively enter the Joust itself and participate, a knight and team must be entered as per category A (see below in section 'Categories'). Rules of the Joust The Joust itself will be run in brackets, with two knights challenging each other. The winner moves on to the next bracket, until a champion can be declared. A Jousting match will follow the best out of three principle and results are dictated by a D6 dice roll performed by the organizer (me, @Khorne). The highest roll takes the round. When both contestants roll a 1, they are both tilted and no equipment modifiers will be applied (see later, below). E.g.: We have two participants, Knight A and B. They ride out three times, with the following results: Knight A scores 5, Knight B scores a 4; Knight A takes the round Knight A rolls 1, Knight B rolls 1; Draw Knight A rolls 3, Knight B rolls 2; Knight A takes the round In the above example, Knight A is the winner and continues to the next bout. Equipment A Knight and his retinue can bring some equipment to the fore, in order to press their own advantage. These are slight modifiers that might help tip the luck of the dice into your favor. Each Knight can pick one of the following to bring to the Joust: An extra horse; bringing an extra horse will let you re-roll the worst result of the matchup. However, the new score does not take your old score into account, so while there is a chance you score a lot more, there is also the chance that the new result is lower. A squire with backup lance; a fresh lance helps you get a better result. Your worst roll gets a +1 added to its score. An announcer; a hype man announces your Knight and tells tall tales of past glorious deeds. Your opponent is intimidated and therefore his best roll is modified with -1. E.g.: Our participants, Knight A and B have brought their equipment. Knight A brought an extra horse, while Knight B brought an announcer. Taking above results as the base gets us this: Knight A scores 5, Knight B scores a 4; however, Knight A is intimidated by the announcer (-1) so his score is now also 4; Draw Knight A rolls 1, Knight B rolls 1; both Knights are tilted and no modifiers can apply; Draw Knight A rolls 3, Knight B rolls 5; Knight A's worst round is re-rolled, but the new score is sadly 1; Knight B takes the round With the modifiers applied and a stroke of bad luck for Knight A, Knight B takes this matchup and moves on to the next bout. Categories Cat. A: Show your Knight and his Retinue Who is your contestant and where does he hail from? Show us a Knight, his followers and equipment. Regale us with a tale. This category is mandatory if you want to participate in the Joust itself, as described above. Entries must contain at the very minimum: Your (1x) Knight. The Knight must belong to your Faction, this may or may not be your sig fig - that is up to your choosing. Your Knight can be a posh knight, an errant knight, hedge knight, etc. A minimum of 1 squire A minimum of 1 horse When choosing equipment from the above list, make sure this is included in your build. For example, if your knight brings an extra horse, show the extra horse in your Category A entry. Entries must include at least one picture of the Knight with his retinue and a picture of the Knight geared up and sat on his horse. While your Cat. A entry is your character for the Joust, it also serves as an entry on its own in this category. Meaning: even if you lose the Joust, your entry can still win the category if your retinue, build and story are deemed to be "the best". Your retinue may also be larger than what is described in the list. Feel free to add extra characters, but they won't have impact on gameplay. Your Knight has a personal priest to call upon when jousting? Bring him in! A jester to lighten the mood? Sure! Also: custom pieces and 3rd party pieces are definitely welcome! Example Lord Uwe Brokhorst of the Storm Isles has traveled from the windy isles off the northern coasts of Altonia to participate in the Royal Joust and demonstrate his merit in combat. With him, he has brought his trusty squire Klaus and a bannerman to show off his colors. Domnall the Regaler walks ahead of the retinue telling boastful yarns of the great courage his lord has exhibited throughout the years and the many battles he has fought in. In particular, Domnall tells of how Uwe, originally of Balondian stock, fought together with his mercenary company on the side of Taemric rebels during the Long War. In gratitude for his help, he was gifted a traditional tartan cloth which he wears into battle ever since, hoping that it brings him good fortune. In battle he wears a signature green armor, festooned with knotwork inlay. His grinning helmet is a classic Balondian pattern and refers to the legendary founder of Balondia, Hengast the Red. A belligerent and fiery soul, Hengast was always looking for the next opponent to best and territory to conquer. In order to continually wage battle in honor of the gods, he was bestowed eternal life. One event of his life tells of how he lost his head in combat and as the chopped off head was rolling on the floor, it was widely grinning and mocking its opponent. The rest of the body continued the fight as if nothing happened and killed the opponents. It retrieved the head, which it then magically re-attached to the body. By wearing a helmet of grinning mouth pattern, the Knight laugh in the face of death as well, and hopes to be granted a similar blessing. Deadline for Cat. A entry: May 15th, 2026 Cat. B: Build your knight’s quarters Show us the abode where your knight will stay during the tournament. Is it a fancy tent? Does your hedge knight call an old tree his home, or does he prefer to stay in the city? Size: minimum of 16x16 Deadline for Cat. B entry: June 1st, 2026 Cat. C: The Fairground A royal joust is more than just the tilting games. Many camp followers, common folk and traders flock to the fair grounds in order to feast and make some coin. Or lose coin depending on your luck. Show some of the activities next to the joust. A blacksmith fixing the knights’ armor, a traveling circus troupe keeping people entertained in between matches, a mobile shrine where a priest blesses your sword for a small fee … Size: minimum of 16x16 Deadline for Cat. B entry: June 1st, 2026 Post your entries as, for example: [MAR - Joust Cat. A] - Entry name. General rules of BOBSTOO apply, meaning custom parts, 3rd party parts, digital builds, etc. ALL ARE WELCOME! If you have any further questions, feel free to ask them in this thread. Prizes to be TBD, but most of all: this is meant as a fun event ! Quote
NOD Posted 58 minutes ago Posted 58 minutes ago This is a fun challenge! I like the different categories and there is enough time to think about and build. My knowledge of the English language is limited; even with Google Translate I don't always understand everything. Do I have to sign up with one of the 5 factions before I can participate in the Challenge? Quote
