I have a large collection of 9V track, about 2/3 of it is from the World City line that was sold up through last year (and still clearanced at LEGO shop). The rest of the track is from thr 4534 LEGO Express set. The 4534 track, I've noticed, is a bit darker, kind of a more true gray, and the track from the World City line is a lighter, bluish gray. Is there any difference in terms of value or desirability? I'd much rather have all matching track, so Im wondering if it's fair to seek out trades, my 4534 LEGO Express track for an equal amount of World City track.

before a certain date, bluish dark gray just didn't exist. than at a certain dark morning, LEGO decided to switch to some new colors and dark bluish gray was born... so that is why you have two colors of tracks the older is normal dark grey, the newer is bluish. Some people want the old color of course but newer tracks are likely to be less rusty etc so I myself would go for that and I guess price doesn't matter as well (AFAIK).

I also just recently started to buy 9v track. And I hae like 75% old gray and the rest dark blue gray. It is annoying but in the future I plan to make gravel and everything, so hopefully it won't be noticeable

I'm in the same boat as Highlandcattle. I was really irritated when I started to buy newer track and discover the bley. While I don't really mind either color, I just want it all the same. The new bley looks newer and more shiny. I think I prefer the old stuff. Personally, unless you have a lot of 9V track already, I'd probably just wait to see what the new train system is like. They may replace the track all together rendering all of it useless for new sets. I suppose in your case, I would just try to get the most of what you already have.

Anyone collecting 9V trains, especially just starting out, should keep in mind not only the dark grey / dark bluish grey track colours but also that the whole system has been discontinued for a while now and parts such as track, motors and controllers will only become rarer and more expensive. The problem will change from deciding what to get to if you can get it at all. 9V train motors sold out in the US a month ago with just a few still in outlet stores.
