splattergnome Posted August 13, 2008 Posted August 13, 2008 (edited) Imagine that you were going to be dropped on a desert island with only $50 of LEGO bricks - and you could only choose from that which are currently available on S@H. You will never have any other LEGO bricks or sets than what you choose now. You can safely ignore sales tax and shipping and handling - or food, for that matter. Will you choose a licensed set? Maybe a bunch of Creator pods for pieces? A bulk bucket for the pieces? Or would you rather choose none at all than have to be forced to choose? Something with more play value, or more flexibility, or more specialized? And -why- would you choose what you choose? As an additional challenge, try only $20 (or of course your local equivalent!) Nyundi Posted August 13, 2008 Posted August 13, 2008 So this is a little more challenging, if you think about it, than it first appears. Sure, limiting yourself to $50 sounds pretty rough, but it's even worse when you consider the consequences! Many great sets in the $50 range totally lose their charm without the $10 and $20 sets to back them up. And many $10 and $20 sets just aren't that great as stand alone sets. (Well, they are, but when you consider that you have practically nothing else to mix and match with them, they start to dwindle a bit). So you need to find a few good sets that work well together, and add enough useful (non <insert that tiresome argument>) pieces to flex creativity. To boot, keep in mind you'll be stuck on a desert island... you aren't like to have a table to build on, or organizers to store things in. Finally, you don't want too many really tiny pieces... I imagine if you dropped one in the sand its likely to disappear for good! Also, nothing battery operated, unless you want the fun to die in a week That being said, here are my selections: 5612 Police Officer 5613 Firefighter 5620 Street Cleaner 7731 Mail Van 6177 Lego Basic Bricks Deluxe 626 Large Green Baseplate Coming in at $49.50. This selection would give me a plate to build on (taking care of the table) a large box to store it all in, but with a big enough opening to root around in it (from the bricks deluxe set), over 700 pieces, four minifigs and some accessories (and a dog). There are wheels to make a vehicle, and plenty of basic bricks to do all sorts of things with. And as a bonus, the sweeper piece that comes with the street cleaner is really fun to touch! Quote
Manta Posted August 13, 2008 Posted August 13, 2008 Probably a bunch of smaller castle sets, because Castle is awesome, and I'd get alot of minifigs to do wars with for my deserted island time. But I'd probably also not get stranded, but that's just me, it's fine if you guys like getting stranded. Quote
Derek Posted August 13, 2008 Posted August 13, 2008 Ooo! Great topic! Hmm. Very tricky. Indy Jungle duel- $10 Rebel BP -$10 Stormie BP- $10 Dwarves Mine defender- $10 Agents mission 1- $10 I'd rather have a varied selection, as opposed one big set. That would be a difficult desicion to make, I had trouble narrowing it down. Quote
The Nightwing Reborn Posted August 13, 2008 Posted August 13, 2008 (edited) I would like a variety: 1. Jetpack Pursuit $10 2. Battle Arachnoid $8 3. Police Motorcycle $4 4. Troll Warrior $4 5. Fire Car $4 6. Crystal Hawk $4 7. Large Green Baseplate $5 8. Doc and Patient $3 9. Coast Guard Kayak $4 10.Mini Digger $4 Doc and patient is really for a women to even out my 50$ male city. To make it interesting for myself I chose items I do not yet own. )TNR( Edited August 13, 2008 by The Nightwing Reborn Quote
Dovchenko Posted August 16, 2008 Posted August 16, 2008 Very, very unique and awesome thread. I would take: Wookiee Attack Clone Battle Pack Originally, it's 40 bucks and 10 bucks Canadian. I guess I'm good. On the island, recreating the Battle of Kashyyk wouldn't be very hard. Plus, it would make a fine collection of figs if you ask me. Quote
Minifig Lecturer Posted August 16, 2008 Posted August 16, 2008 I think I'd take some small sets with batteries. Quote
Skipper 24 Posted August 16, 2008 Posted August 16, 2008 A few of these brick boxes so I could build a bridge or raft to get back to the mainland and buy more LEGO . Quote
LEGOMAN132 Posted August 16, 2008 Posted August 16, 2008 MT-31 Trike -9.99 Chameleon Hunter-14.99 Imperial Dropship-9.99 Crystal Hawk-3.49 Mini-Robot-3.49 Troll Warrior-3.49 The Knight-3.49 all for 48.93 Quote
AwesomeStar Posted August 18, 2008 Posted August 18, 2008 So hard... I'd just fall on a big spiky rock, to end my suffering. Quote
Void Master Posted August 20, 2008 Posted August 20, 2008 I would buy as many brick boxes that have alot of pieces in them so I can construct the largest lego bridge ever and get to land. Though I'm not sure how many you would get for £25 or £10. Quote
Cardinal Brick Posted August 21, 2008 Posted August 21, 2008 An intresting topic Desert Island Lego! I think I'd take Crossbow attack 5.99 Kinghts Catapult Defense 9.99 Lego Basic Bricks 12.99 Imperial Dropship 9.99 Rebel Scoutspeeder 9.99 Total 48.95 Though I do note I wouldn't have been able to get quite as much in the UK as the US UK price £36.45 Maybe this should be the prize one day for a contest Quote
fallentomato Posted August 21, 2008 Posted August 21, 2008 Call me old fashioned but I'd just want two of these. If I'm going to be stranded with limited Lego, I don't want a bunch of specialized pieces, I want raw materials to unleash my creativity. Besides if I had minifigs with me, I'd probably go crazy and start talking to them. Quote
