EV3 Brick Unresponsive

I dusted off my unused 31313 Mindstorms kit and built the Bulldoz3r model.  I was able to power up the EV3 brick, but the only thing I could run was "Demo".  The left/right/up/down buttons are unresponsive.  When I tried the gray key to the upper left, I get the power off X / checkmark, but there's no way to select the checkmark.

I did run the firmware update from the Mindstorms desktop software and it said the update was successful.  Now the "demo" program is gone & keys are still ignoring me.

Any suggestions?

I had one EV3 where the left/up/etc part didn't work correctly anymore. It was pretty easy to open it up and fix the contact points. I'll see if I can find the reference I used at the time..
