OK, I found something wierd on brickset (hope you don't mind me mentioning that site here?). Castle sets by year: they have info all the way to 2000. And then the next year is 2007. Does this mean that there were no Castle sets in the 2001-2006 period? This period is during my "dark age" anyway, so I have no idea. can you help me?

Or simply brickset is missing all those years ? (hard to believe).

I don't think there were any castle sets then but I think we had Knights Kingdom.

There was the brightly coloured Knights Kingdom then, yes. Maybe it's under a different heading (Knights Kingdom probably).

Thanks a lot!

I've seen photos of some Knights Kingdom sets and they look horrible!! ). Maybe only those who like bionicle would like Knights Kingdom... I dislike both. Anyway, thanks for the info!!

Knights Kingdom (II) is here on Brickset.

For the Knights Kingdom "action figures" that is true, but take a look at the normal minifig sets. Certainly the weakest looking Castle subtheme, but they were OK.

Knight's Kingdom tried to fill the void left by classic castle (and the original Knight's Kingdom back in 2000 - without those bloody jellybeans!) and failed miserably. I have four jellybean knights, seeing as there wasn't any other castle to supplement my medieval castle desire. Mind you, the shadow knight minifigures were probably the best part of the entire line, seeing as they had dark red sleeves - perfect for changing your 2007 castle to evil.

1999 was actually the height of the Lego Castle Dark Ages. I came out of my own dark age that year, and there was no Castle Lego at all. The Fright Knight stuff that remained on shelves here and there was rather sub-par, a sign of how Lego was dumbing down their models at the time.

There was a lot of excitement in 2000 when Lego re-introduced a "real" Castle theme, starting with the Knights' Kingdom in 2000. True, the models admittedly were not that great, but Lego Castle has steadily gotten better and better every year since (weird Bionicle knights excepted). I'm somewhat nostalgic for KK as well, since it was the first Castle Lego I started buying following my dark age.

Needless to say, Lego is really on a roll with their latest Castle sets, and I hope next year is even awesomer.

Thanks for the input!

I am happy that during my "dark age" (for me it started in 1999 or 2000) there was no real Castle line ... Because I love Castle and fortunately I didn't miss that much during those years! :)

Well my dark ages were for about 20 years, so i only really remember sets like this 6077-2.jpg

So KK and KK2 hold no special nostalgia for me! I really love the current line with Trolls, Skeletons and Dwarves thrown in. Its a real fantasy feel this time round. Cant wait to see what 2009 has in store, well once i fill out my Troll army anyway.....

I think the KK sets suffered from a convergence of events that had much of the AFOL community in a tizzy. It used the new color formulations and lots of it. The bley was really bright compared to the older formulation, and this wasn't helped at all by the rainbow knights idea. This was also when Lego was really in the height of there movie backdrop castle designs. Most of the KK sets were empty framework buildings with jumbo wall pieces. The last problem(for me) was that the sets seemed to focus more on playability then build. There were lots of moving parts and catapults(even on the horses) and this left the build very scattered.

All that being said, I liked the castle sets of that age for their variety if nothing else. I own every set from that line(well not the bionicle things) and I really like the variety of armor and weapons I now have available. The later series even had some really neat armor with chainmail details that looks great on a champion figure leading a squad of soldiers. They bring to mind the knights of the round table, and help to separate the commanding figures from the rank and file.

Without the figures though, these sets weren't very spectacular.

Hmmm, my dark era was quite long too, but prior to entering it I was playing with clone brands which only now I can evaluate as 100% stolen from LEGO. Anyway, if memory serves me correct the last theme I was interested then was castle. Since I started my interest in LEGO I have evaluated a lot of the older sets and I can really agree with the majority who think KK ware bad series. It's over now and I like the new castle sets, but KK still has some implications - namely that if you want to buy a vintage castle set you'll have to settle for something that is around 10 or more years older, which makes it scarcer and consequently - more expensive.

I hated Knights Kingdom but some of the old Bionicles I liked like the Borohk and the original Toa now they're all goofy and weird.

A bit off-topic, dontcha think? :look:

Anywho, there were those Knights Kingdom sets, but not just the jelly knights. There were the Knights Kingdom dudes with the Lion symbol, versus the Bull Knights, then later Knights Kingdom represented those colourful knights with their own shield symbols like the monkey and the bear. I do find it strange how they've disappeared from Brickset though...
