Recently I have broken down my second copy of set 42163 and used this to build a MOC, this is a tracked lift and carry crane.

The gear behind the cabin is used to control the two stage lift of the crane arm. This has a hook to allow a load to be attached. This was built using only the parts from set 42163.

And thank you for your response.  I've never tried to make a B model and figured it would be best to begin with a small set.  At this point I'm more concerned with learning how to to approach such a endeavor than actually making something presentable.  Sounds like it's good to start with an idea and be willing to go in a different direction as your progress.  Thanks again, I appreciate it.
