Will end up using as many needed once I understand how many are needed.

You will have to try it and see, as there are so many variables that will depend on the pose such as the angle at which the joint is set, the distribution of weight and the distance from the joint. A heavy weight directly above the joint when it is straight will have essentially no moment, whereas even a light weight 50cm from the joint in a 90 degree position could have a significant moment that puts pressure on the joint.

As @MAB already says there's a million factors. I remember it all too well: On the LEGO Ninjago Movie big shark sub they felt like they would never move, on the First Order Assault Walker the felt a lot less rigid due to the length of the legs. it will really depend a lot on angles, length of segments etc..
