"An extremely large and dangerous leviathan, roughly 95m long, with a thick plated exoskeleton that burrows through dense ice shelves with minimal resistance.

Assessment: Aggressive and lethal - Avoid"

~PDA entry for the Ice Worm

The Ice Worm

I originally designed & built this model as an entry into the 12x12 vignette category of Space Jam 2021. I was so happy with the finished product that I decided to have it stick around.

The scene pictured is mostly based on Promotional artwork and the Early Access trailer for Unknown Worlds Entertainment’s Subnautica: Below Zero game. It features a small cutout of an icy area, Robin (the game’s protagonist) piloting her Snowfox (hoverbike) and dashing past an erupting Ice Worm Leviathan. There’s also two types of flora from the game: a Frost Vase Plant and a Scrub Bush. Neither appear in the primary source material, but they help balance out the scene and add some interest to the overall appearance. Canonically these plants don’t grow near each other but screw canon, it’s fiction! I can build whatever I want to!

Before ending this post I’d like to highlight two more things: first, the custom-built legs for the Robin minifigure. Her seating position with regular minifig legs would look incredibly awkward, so I opted for a different route. Despite having completely different proportions to a standard figure, these legs blend shockingly well with the normal minifigure parts. Second, the Ice Worm’s mouth is able to close! I really wanted to include this feature from the official design and I’m very satisfied with the solution. I don’t have a picture though, I didn’t want to risk toppling the build while it was in this perfect position :P

Vicious beast. The segmented design works well, the mouth is great (especially with the coloration), and the little scooter gives it scale. Great work.
