Dr. Brick Posted July 6, 2008 Posted July 6, 2008 Has anyone got this: I'm thinking of buying it but I'm not sure what to expect... Could someone inform me? Maybe even a review? (That would really be nice! ) Thanks anyway! Dr. Brick Quote
Shoc Posted July 6, 2008 Posted July 6, 2008 I have it, I got it for my birthday last year. It's a good book, expecially if you want to know about different ways of constructing things, and ways to use pieces. There are many illustrations, and it is written in an easy to understand style. I hope this helps, maybe someone could give a better explanation of it but that's a basic overview. :skull: Quote
Axle Posted July 6, 2008 Posted July 6, 2008 The strange thing is that this is available on www.lego.com! Here: http://shop.lego.com/product/Default.aspx?...amp;LangId=2057 I would ask tog et it if it was availible in Ireland. Quote
simonwillems Posted July 6, 2008 Posted July 6, 2008 I too am the owner of a copy of this book. It's nice to read, displays various techniques (how to build gigantic bricks and make a small aircraft with it for instance), it has a complete parts list (complete= on the release date!) and it shows some great train rolling stock suggestions. I was not completely blown away by this book, but being a collector it is worthy putting on the shelf. Consider it a nice gadget to go along with this years Collectors catalog. The pictures in it are all in black and white, by the way. Buy it! On a side note: I am writing this from my memory because even after an extensive search of my room I have not been able to locate the book.... Does that imply something? Quote

It's also available in Legoland (Windsor anyway). Too bad you can't get it in Ireland, maybe it will be in a bookshop? xenologer Posted July 6, 2008 Posted July 6, 2008 I think I saw this at a Lego Shop and glanced at it then decided it wasn't telling me anything new. I'm guessing if you already know the spacing for technic beams, and how to calculate 'almost' right triangles for brick stress, you probably don't need it. Quote

Dr. Brick Posted July 7, 2008 Author Posted July 7, 2008 (edited) Too bad you can't get it in Ireland, maybe it will be in a bookshop? (maybe not ) I found it on the Waterstones website, along with 7 full pages of other books/comics/games reffering to LEGO, there even exists a 'Mindstorms for Dummies' book. (There was also a book that didn't reffer to LEGO, but the author was called Peggy Lego. ) Thanks for the information guys, I think I'll get this when I'm on holiday in Scotland. Eilif Posted July 8, 2008 Posted July 8, 2008 I would definately recomend purchasing this book. It seems to be designed like a re-entry into the Hobby for the AFOL coming out of the dark ages. True, this means that much of it would be review for the experienced builder, but I think that most people will find a number of "ah-ha!" moments when reading it. When I read it, it was the first time I had seen a clear explaination of some of the finer points of LEGO geometry. (sideways bricks vs vertical, etc.) It's one of the only printed discourses on the basic LEGO system, and it's great for touching on some of the less discussed aspects of the hobby such as Miniland scale, Mega-scale, microscale, and mosaics. It also has some thoughtfull things to say about organizing one's collection and using non-digital means to plan a model. I don't refer to it when building, but it has a permenant place in my workspace, and I still (almost 3 years later) find myself flipping through it from time to time. If you are the kind of person that likes to read about your hobby, you will likely find it a good read. Quote
Holodoc Posted July 10, 2008 Posted July 10, 2008 I got this book for my last years birthday. It contains information about buildings techniques you will have heard of before, especially when you´re into MOCing. BUT it shows a lot of different things you can ALSO do with your bricks of which you probably never have thought of: Building large, building, very small, building Legoland style, etc. In other ways: This book is a perfect inspiration. Don´t buy it, if you lack time... Quote
