Great idea Rriggs! There are enough of us that can APPRECIATE what you are doing here! Looking at these older sets, it's like a trip down memory lane. Thanks!

This is a great thread it’s great to see how things have changed over time and how much larger everything has gotten. Though on a real world note it seems to me that ambulance in the UK have grown at about the rate of the Lego ones.

You are so right about placing problems. 95% of my LEGO collection is minifig-based and is mostly 1980s & 1990s Town sets. I love the new sets and the detail is great but somehow the XXL crane will never manage to drive along my LEGO Town high street!!

Cheers

Good comparisons! I myself have the ambulance car from the 1980s! But what happened to the white 1x2 brick with the red cross on it? It should normally be between the lights. Did you lose it?

And to comment on Rog's opinion:

I think the same. That's why I don't buy those new and big sets. CC and so on are lovely and I do want them, but all those big vehicles are just out of place if I add them to my collection of cars from the 80s and 90s.

This is my favorite thread at the moment. I really love these comparisons and compared a couple of garbage trucks myself a while back.

Keep it up! Please :cry_happy:

It's great! Nostalgia and comparisons might not say anything to young members, but for old and grumpy AFOLs...

I'm a young member, but I think it's cool! :sweet:

I love the comparisons you have made rriggs! They show how crazily large Lego sets are getting, and how the City theme is getting very repetitive now... :sadnew: I prefer the old versions, though I own none.

Lost long ago unfortunately; most of my 1980s LEGO is very, very well played with and suffers from all the signs of age and use you would expect. Keep meaning to pick one up off Bricklink but never get round to it!! :classic:

I know what you mean. I don't have that 2x2 tile with the red cross on it for my ambulance car. :cry_sad: Also lost long ago. I was very young when I got it, just 4 or 5.

How did I ever miss this vintage topic! :look:

Excellent comparisons on the examples you shown, rriggs

I am a classic town at heart, since childhood and I understand how sad it is to see our usual typical 4-studs wide vehicle evolving it into giant sets such as 6 studs, 8 studs etc. It's no longer the same as before. I still prefer the good old days. :classic:

I am enjoying this topic very much!

I find it very interesting to see how much LEGO sets have evolved over the years. The newer sets are much more detailed and overall better looking, but the old ones still have that cute look to them that I really like.

Keep up the comparisons!

I like the theme of this topic a lot! It seems so obvious that TLC update older models but can't say I've ever sat down and compared any side by side, it's good to see this. Keep 'em coming!

Been busy at work so not done any updates for a few days but as I've got a couple of days off so here's the next one:

This is 6506 Pursuit Car & 7236 Police Car (which I only just got!):

IMAG0001p.JPG

Both relatively sporty cars for their time the advances(?) in Lego design are clear to see.

Nose to nose shows the difference in size more clearly and highlights the difference in wheel size too.

IMAG0006p.JPG

From above the new model is definitely more car-like but has lost some of the original's charm. The new car is almost twice as long (7 versus 13 studs long).

IMAG0014p.JPG

Another good angle. I do like the new car but I have several 6506s which will all look tiny against the new car when parked outside my cop shop. I think I will have to set it up so that the old one's are standard police cars and the new one will be my pursuit car - Even though the official names are actually the other way round.

IMAG0018p.JPG

While I am a very big fan of the classic police uniforms the new uniform in this shot looks an awful lot smarter. I think the new chap will have a very rapid promotion to chief in my force...

IMAG0011p.JPG

I also really like this new style standard minifig head. Only a slight adjustment to the eyes but it looks really good.

Cheers

The old ones looks dinky and impractical compared to the new and sleeker models.

I agree, I prefer the newer Police car, but it is also impractical, at least the older one had doors!:tongue:

I have the old one, but not the new one. They are both nice cars, but neither one looks like what I see as a Police car. Great comparison shots and explaination though.

As to the figures, I like the older figs for police, but the newer figs with their slightly nautical emblems seem like they would make great port authority or security officers. At Brickworld I heard some kids exclaim that there was one of the "old" police figures. I turned around, expecting to see the figure you placed above on the left, only to see that it was a fig from the early 2000's. I guess at 26, I must be positively ancient.

About time for another comparison I think...

I went to TRU this morning as there have been rumours of farm sets appearing on the shelves and I have been keen to get my hands on the 7634 Tractor since I saw spy shots of it. Anyway, sure enough TRU have got a few farm sets (the tractor & the SUV/Horse Box) on the shelves so I got my tractor. Having got home and put it together (it is great BTW) I dug out my other red tractor - 6608 from 1982.

Front shots of the two tractors side by side. The new guy is clearly a farmer (great double-sided torso BTW  ) and the old guy just some random male minifig. Interestingly, the two tractors have the same size headlights. Think I'll be adding extra lights to my 7634!!

Imag0001.jpg

The new one is just bigger in every way. The old tractor, despite not having a cab, does have a proper driver's seat - The new one doesn't. Another minor mod on the way I think... I like some of the really little similarities: the colour, the exhaust on the same side on both, the headlight size and height from the ground.

I challenged the two guys to a race. They were both well up for it! It was a close start with the lightweight of 6608 allowing him to get a great start but by the time they got to the camera the new big boy was just edging into the lead. By the time they finished (fell off the end of the table :oh3: ) the big guy had it sewn up!

Imag0010.jpg

One last shot showing a close up of the rear wheels on the two to emphasise the massive difference in size between the two. You can also see the Technic axle on the new tractor which hints at the basic Technic chassis that the tractor has. This is in stark comparison to the 6x2 plate and car wheels used on 6608.

Man, how on earth did i miss that topic????

Excellent, brilliant idea rriggs! You 've just made me feel :cry_happy: . I also own all of the classic sets that you 've shown and almost all of the new ones. (yes the big crane is BIG and not for me). I did the exact same "experiment" 3 months ago, shortly after exiting dark ages and the first candidates were the green Cargo Plane and the red plane from the 6392 Airport. I placed the old plane on top of the Cargo Plane and the :oh3: factor was big.

Keep comparing!

EDIT: It's like a fight between the mind and the heart. ( Don't get me wrong. Memories sometimes can get quite strong.)

True enough, seems many more of the older sets did have doors compared to the current sets.

Could always use the older cars for parking code enforcment as they look like about that size.

I just stuck them altogether in the car park at headquarters and they look fine together.

The little one's look like local beat cars while the new shape cars look like high speed pursuit cars. With the mix of other vehicles around (vans, SUVs, trucks, etc) I think the difference works out OK.

You may notice another 20 year growth in the background of this shot with the police stations 7744 and 6386 side by side...

As I've already said in a previous post in this topic, I started building my LEGO collection 3-4 months ago, after leaving dark ages behind me. I had also bought the Cargo Plane trying to become familiar with the modern LEGO environment. So, here are some comparison shots I took back then with the whole fleet (actually the 6368 plane is only missing).

DISCLAIMER: Any intentions of highlighting the embiggening of LEGO sets is definetely intentional  .

Hope it's ok for posting the pictures here rriggs :classic:

Yes, this suitcase contains half of my LEGO history.

pict0358.jpg

It's interesting that Cargo Plane's tail wings are almost the same size with the passenger's planes main wings :oh3: .

pict0359.jpg

Btw, the 6356 Med-Star Rescue Plane is still my favorite!

Classic Town.....classic years..... :wub::cry_happy:

Great plane comparison. Med-Star rescue plane was one of my early sets too, and is a favorite of mine. The rear stretcher loading door is brilliant and seemed quite innovative at the time.
