Tom_castlefan Posted June 27, 2008 Posted June 27, 2008 What is your opinion of the new dragons as featured in the king's castle siege set, the troll warship and the skeleton tower? Do you feel they are <insert that tiresome argument> and out of place, or a worthy addition to your MOC's? Do you feel this is how lego should continue to create dragons, or should they return to their roots and make old style dragons? Personally, I love both. I have a multitude of classic dragons, as well as one of each of the dragons from the fantasy era sets. Tom Quote
cartoondude Posted June 27, 2008 Posted June 27, 2008 (edited) I agree with you. Do you mean the old school dragons like this: I also like the brick-built viking dragons. Edited June 27, 2008 by cartoondude Quote
Dragonator Posted June 28, 2008 Posted June 28, 2008 Ah, a topic I really have to post in! Lets look at your question. All dragons, it has been accepted, are awesome and amazing. Even so, various people have differing views on the Lego versions. The original 'classic' dragons, as seen in such sets as the Dragon Masters etc, were the first to be produced by Lego. Wonderfully compatible, they contain a true essence of what Lego is. They are of a good size to fit into smaller MOCs, without having to widen your city streets to make room. Also, the black ones make good statues when they have black wings. These dragons fit in very well with the original style of Lego castles, as they could easily land on a rooftop or walk through a larger doorway. Their only problem was that the only functioning parts were the arms, tail, and mouth to some extent. Still, I love them. Only a few years ago we saw the rise of a new style of dragons, those seen in the Viking sets. Combining Bionicle and system pieces, these dragons were larger, easier to pose with various jointed limbs, and very nicely built. Because of their size, they are not suitable to be in smaller MOCs, however they have the greatest amount of customisation options. Ity is possible to build all sorts of different dragons with bricks, rather than just using the single-mold pieces provided by Lego. Now, most recently, we have the large dragons, following the line of '<insert that tiresome argument>' pieces that Lego has been making recently. These still have a greater amount of dexterity compared to the originals, however they are much larger and bulkier, and nowhere near as poseable as the Viking style dragons. I must say that they are not my favourite dragon style put out by Lego, however they are still dragons and so should obviously be respected. For me, I love all the dragons. The originals for their classic feeling, and way they can easily interact with minifigs; Viking styles for their poseability and very nice design, as well as being sble to be customized, and the new ones for their nice wings and great print jobs. However, I do not think that I would like to continue to see Lego produce these newer dragons, when compared to the older styles. For me, the classic ones are the best for doing Lego scenes, and I enjoy being able to build various styles of the Viking ones. But in the end it comes down to personal preference. We all love dragons. It is up to you to decide which ones you want to use to portray this love in Lego. Quote
Zepher Posted June 28, 2008 Posted June 28, 2008 I'd have to say the Viking ones are winners. They are really poseable, and are basically, well, lego. Quote
iamded Posted June 28, 2008 Posted June 28, 2008 There's a thread asking which dragon is you favourite, over here. However, this is asking whether you like the new dragon. The answer is yes, I do. It's not entirely unposable, and they have cool printing, especially the green & gold one. The Viking ones allow for a much larger diversity and range of customisation though, which is great for the creative mind. And while the old ones are classic, I don't particularly like them, they're just too small and not posable enough fro me. Still, my opinions tend to change over time, so we'll see. The direction I'd like Lego to take in future, well, these ones are cool, but it would be really neat if the arms and legs had one of those ball click joints, like the 1st generation Exo-force mechs. That would allow for more movement, which is definately a plus for me! ~Peace Quote
Svelte Posted June 28, 2008 Posted June 28, 2008 I didn't like the new red and black dragons, as they look a little cartoony. The green, gold and silver one is lovely though, although they are all a bit too large. I liked the Vikings style dragons, but hated the click ball joints. Poor dragons, half of them looked injured by constantly flopping in the middle or having their legs sag all over the place unevenly. It was nice to have something more brick built though - I just really dislike those ball joints. Quote
lego.ryan Posted June 28, 2008 Posted June 28, 2008 I really like the ones from the 2007/2008 Castle Sets. I have the green "good" dragon from the Troll Warship and the black "bad" one from King's Castle Siege. I was excited when I saw that they were making a Hungarian Horntail dragon for the Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire sets, but was wholly disappointed when I got it. What type of dragon has no arms? I really think TLC hit the nail on the head with the new ones, they're very poseable and all three have excellent detailed prints on them. I also like that the good dragon has an armor print on it. The only negatives I can think of are a) They only come in the expensive $50+ sets (duh) and b) for display purposes, they're pretty heavy. I had a little battle set up on my King's Castle Siege set where the black dragon was flying over a tower (supported by this piece), and it was always falling over and knocking other things down. That's my two cents! -Ryan Quote
Sandy Posted June 28, 2008 Posted June 28, 2008 I currently own the red and the green dragons from the new Castle line, and I really love them. Their hugeness is intimidating, since the minifigs really look minuscule when standing next to the dragons. I agree that the size is an issue if you want to add them into your MOCs, but it also makes them more true to the legends of big scary flying monsters that raze entire cities and armies. I don't think the dragons are <insert that tiresome argument> at all, anyway. There's actually quite many parts to them, and when I toyed around with my own dragons, I found out that they had countless poses. They can crouch, tower, spread themselves for flight etc. This is really a huge leap from my original green and black dragons, who could barely swing their wings, arms and jaws. So yes, I'm loving my new dragons. I'm already thinking about names for them, and I only name my dearest items. What type of dragon has no arms? A wyvern. Quote
Shoc Posted June 28, 2008 Posted June 28, 2008 (edited) I like all the dragons. Sort of. The first ones were the coolest. I love them. Then there are the less remembered little ones in the Harry Potter sets, similar to the baby T-Rexes. I like them too! The Viking dragons were a bit too technic for me, but still very cool. The Hungarian Horntail was good, but not very moveable. I really like the new dragons, they are very compatible with other Lego creatures such as the dinosaurs, KK2 Knights , and, dare I say it, those monstrosities that are the Galidor figures... Anyway, I like the new ones, as they are not too detailed, kind of cartoony, but not too simple either! What type of dragon has no arms? A wyvern. Bah, you beat me to it! :skull: Edited June 28, 2008 by Shoc Quote
Lt. Col. Thok Posted June 28, 2008 Posted June 28, 2008 Dragons are dragons, no matter how crappy Lego could make them. Seriously, we all love dragons, especially the brick-built wonders, so.....yeah, lost my train of thought... Quote
lego.ryan Posted June 28, 2008 Posted June 28, 2008 A wyvern. How did I know that someone would answer that? And I forgot another thing that I love about the new dragons- they can hold minifigs by their legs! Quote
Matn Posted June 28, 2008 Posted June 28, 2008 I like all the dragons, but least I like those from Vikings and most I like the Hungarian Horntale and the new Castle ones (although I don't own them, I only one the first ones and those from Vikings). And the Creator one looks also very interesting, I'll certainly buy him... if I see him... Quote
DiverDan Posted June 28, 2008 Posted June 28, 2008 I really like the new dragons. I can't really compare them to the Viking ones, because unfortunately I don't own one of those, but they do look better from what I've seen. Quote
Lego Knight Posted June 28, 2008 Posted June 28, 2008 I like the new Dragons, the Viking dragons seem to skeletal to me. Quote
JimBee Posted June 28, 2008 Posted June 28, 2008 i like the new ones best, although they remind me of the Megabloks Dragons. They are junoirised, but still the best of the three types. And i didnt even know TLG made a Harry Potter dragon, ill have to google that. Quote
Fluyt Posted June 28, 2008 Posted June 28, 2008 (edited) The new ones are the ugliest ones ever, way too <insert that tiresome argument>, almost like duplo or megablocks. Viking dragons are the best, the old ones (and horntail) 2nd. New ones are not worthy of being in a top-list. Edited June 28, 2008 by Fluyt Quote

iamded Posted June 30, 2008 Posted June 30, 2008 No problem, after all this thread is really asking what you think of the newest style dragons, and waht direction you think TLC should take in future dragon-wise. My thread is just asking about favourites. ~Peace Quote
fenrir Posted July 1, 2008 Posted July 1, 2008 I don;t like the new dragons, I don't display them. It's more like duplo I'm a big Viking fan, and like the viking dragons the most. ( because that's what a dragon should look like in my opinion) So i would like to see more of the viking line sort of dragons. Quote
Cardinal Brick Posted July 1, 2008 Posted July 1, 2008 I like the new dragon, they are about the right size to allow a minifig to ride on it’s back without it looking a bit odd. I do hope to a quire a few more of them at some point, however if I wanted a dragon to terrorise a city rather than for someone to ride I think you’d need the green Viking dragon which I love for it’s scale a dragon is meant to be huge. For the future I think we should stay with what we’ve got for the time being. Quote

Sir Dillon Posted July 1, 2008 Posted July 1, 2008 I did not like the new dragons when I first saw them... they looked too much like Duplo to me. They have really grown on me over time though, and though I don't own it, I really like the look of the armored dragon in the Troll Longship. Quote
Tom_castlefan Posted July 1, 2008 Author Posted July 1, 2008 The green one was the first one I got, and I have to agree that it looks best out of all available from the new sets. Tom Quote
