Can you use lego mario with no app?

Can you use lego mario without the app? I know that you can get the instructions pdf, but do you need it for other stuff?

The app is only "needed" for instructions and as a way to keep track of what sets you have. All the set play features are by the bricks, barcode, and Mario/Luigi figure.

@Darkdragon Thats what I thought, but does mario need any software updates or anything?

That's a good point, yes they do need updates whenever a new wave of sets comes out. It will work without the update but you won't get the new set features.

@Darkdragon Ok, nice to know. Would you recommend the mario sets to someone who has only played mario a few times, but thinks that this looks fun to try out?

I definitely recommend the starter sets if you haven't tried them yet. Right now both starter sets are on clearance everywhere too, which makes me worry about the theme but it might just be new starter sets on the way. The starter set has enough to build a level and that should help you out to see if you like the theme for play or not. My son has been playing with them since the theme came out and he loves it, he actually likes the cheaper sets the most - the big airship and even Bowser's Castle weren't as much for for him because he couldn't really design his own level for it the way the smaller sets can be used.

@Darkdragon OK, maybe i will pick one up. I think that making mariocart out of these would be really cool too! What starter set do you recommend? Mario of luigi?

The sets are very similar, just depends on which character you like better and/or which you can find available.

Mario Kart could be fun, to get some moc ideas for it you could definitely take a look at the K'Nex Mario Kart sets.
