BrickController2 controller compatibility

Hello, 

I was wondering if BrickController2 works with any controller that you can connect to your device? Or does it need to be from a well known company? For example could I use a $10 or less random company Bluetooth controller or do I need an at least $60 Xbox, PlayStation, etc. controller?
