[HELP] Question about part 18940 and 18942

Could anyone tell me whether the part 18942 (BrickLink - Part 18942 : Gear Rack) can be moved freely inside the 18940 (BrickLink - Part 18940 : Housing)? Or a little force has to be applied when moving? Thanks.

No significant force, this part pairing moves very freely. So much so, that you need a mechanism of some kind to lock movement if you intend to use it for something like that.
