Trouble with Mosaic creation

Hello,

I've been trying to create a round mosaic for a floor since I felt that other techniques did not provide enough possibility for detail. However, as this is my first real time doing a mosaic, I'm not feeling confident with how it is going so far. I'm not sure exactly what I could do to plan it out better, and I'm worried about the extra space you see here. I would love to hear any thoughts or opinions.

Does it have to be that exact circle? As there are some excellent ways of close tiling without unsightly gaps based on hexagons that can then be squared off.

Thank you, but I actually already figured out what to do. I have now completely redesigned the mosaic and I am much happier with it.
