Dovchenko Posted June 4, 2008 Posted June 4, 2008 Lego Castle last year had all of its sets released by July. Very early, and it gives little to look forward to. However, they realized this, and did some positive advertising for 2008- Dwarves' Mine and Skeleton Ship Attack- two supremely great sets. Special edition, widely released, but when you think about it, the hype/excitement is over for Castle 2007. It's the frustration of been there done that. You see, every set seems to have a hype. The Castle sets of this year are... entirely old news. The warship? Reviewed. Siege tower? Reviewed. Battle car? Reviewed. Impulse sets? Half reviewed. If you look at it on a large scale, there's only two impulse sets, the chess set that no one can really afford, and an advent calender with nine figures and "toys" mainly aimed at the younger castle fans. Total cost? Not counting the chess set, well, 40$ of stuff I don't want in the first place. Two impulses that are great but... well they're only impulse... the advent calender is nice but it's just a bunch of figs and random parts... and with the Chess set it's 340$, few people I know who also like LEGO really are interested in the entire chess hype, and having a 70$ board for fans is really nice- but 300$? No offence, I'd rather pay 300$ for a second wave of castle, like we're getting for Star Wars. We have our Warship, our Battle Wagon, our Battle Wheel, our Siege Tower, our Dwarves Mine Defender, a knight and wizard. Star Wars got the same if not more, and that's only round one. They're getting so much for "round two", at least four exclusives and the all time awaited RGS. Nice sets, but I like to buy castle sets. And us castle fans get four things- two tiny little figure sets that only army builders buy more than once- a chess set that again is for the most part unwanted- and an advent callender. Compared to Star Wars, it's like a raincheck. It's been a pretty lackluster year here at LEGO for Castle fans, and I hope that I've shown you how unfair it really is. It's too late to really make more castle sets, but I'm sure that a special edition is still valid? It's only June, they have half a year like they did with the Dwarves Mine, the sudden wonder of 2007. You know what? We need more castle sets! Another special edition for crying out loud! Indy and Star Wars are nice, but really just good for earning LEGO more money. Castle has had a few sets, not enough to make "a year" in my opinion. Last year? Lots of Castle, Star Wars, and... well, enough of everything to make everyone happy! I think that with 2 special edition sets last year and only one this year, Lego needs to make a second. Maybe if we have an okay amount of people believing we deserve more, I can send it in and maybe, just maybe, we'll get another special edition castle set! The chess is too expensive, the impulses too minor, and advent calenders are great but only Christmas related etc. So give us a nice new special edition, TLC! Quote
I Scream Clone Posted June 4, 2008 Posted June 4, 2008 You have to bear in mind that lego has a lot of new lines this year as well, Coast guard, Indy and Spies etc. They may only release so many total sets from their factory each year. I agree that Castle seems like a money earner for TLC. Secondly sets are distributed all over the world at different times. Myself and others on this forum from Australia will have to wait till September for the entire Castle line to hit our shelves.....so we have actually had to wait a lot longer than you to get our next castle fix (only the rerelease of Dwarven mine so far and the two impulses). Its even harder to read all the cool reviews on this site and then still wait 9 mths just to get our hands on the set Cheers ISC Quote
Sandy Posted June 4, 2008 Posted June 4, 2008 I was under the impression that there will be two more impulse sets coming out this year, alongside the Knight, the Wizard and the Troll (with the rat): the Skeleton Wagon and the Knight & Catapult (like we need more of those...). Of course the impulses won't be enough to satisfy your thirst for more lego, but to be honest, I can't even afford all the sets they released this year - and I still have to buy some from last year as well. So if they released even more bigger sets, many of them would have to be left on the shelf only to be gazed with lust, at least in my case. :/ It's of course different to an AFOL with a 3000 € monthly salary, but I'm not one of them, unfortunately. Quote
iamded Posted June 4, 2008 Posted June 4, 2008 Well, I loved the line-up we've had so far, and I can't wait to pick up a couple of the Troll Impulse sets, along with the other two later on. The Castle Advent Calendar is something I'm really looking forward to. I have to disagree with your "'toys' mainly aimed at the younger castle fans" statement, as, if it's anything like the City Advent Calendars, in my opinion the small builds will add to your displays well. I certainly can't wait to see what we get. As for the 'Giant Castle Chess Set', well, I agree it's too expensive for the average AFOL. I mean, it's been all talked over in the Castle '08 thread about the price being reasonable for the content and parts count, but really, who would pay $350 NZ, or $200 US for that, no matter how cool it looks? For the same amount of money you can get the entire '08 Castle line with multiple Impulses, and still have change. Anyway, I know what you're getting at. Every year it gets to Christmas and there's that one Lego set I just couldn't afford throughout the year, which I finally get. This year I've got everything all sorted. Another thing to remember, we've still got to look forward to seeing those Elves! Peace ~iamded Quote
Dwarvenlord Posted June 4, 2008 Posted June 4, 2008 SdPirate, i think you're talking about the Lego GIANT Chess set? Because the normal Chess set is not expensive at all. And I think that a Elf faction is very nice, but not a very big chance that it's realy going to be released... Quote
SlyOwl Posted June 4, 2008 Posted June 4, 2008 I've got a funny feeling that we'll be seeing the first glimpses of elves towards the end of this year, as we saw glipmpses of dwarves and trolls towards the end of last... Quote
Athos Posted June 4, 2008 Posted June 4, 2008 with the Chess set it's 340$, few people I know who also like LEGO really are interested in the entire chess hype, and having a 70$ board for fans is really nice- but 300$? No offence, I'd rather pay 300$ for a second wave of castle, I agree with this point, in theory. Though in practice, I'm not sure I'd have the funds to expend on the first wave of castle and then to drop another $300 on a second. So its kind of nice to be able to skip the chess set and save $300. If, however, I was going to spend that additional $300, I'd much rather do it on a bunch of building sets, rather than a chess set. Steve Quote
Dovchenko Posted June 4, 2008 Author Posted June 4, 2008 Of course, there's loads to spend on now. I love all of the sets coming out, but I've already started collecting Castle for now. Anyone putting in a vote for a SE set? Quote
Batbrick Posted June 4, 2008 Posted June 4, 2008 I think we easily have enough castle this year: Knight Impulse Wizard Impulse Soldier Impulse Skeleton Impulse Dwarve's Mine Defender Troll Assault Tower Raid Dwarfs Mine it came out this year for a lot of countries) Troll Warship Troll Battlewheel Skeleton Battlepack Crownie Battlepack Advent Calender Chess set yes I know it's huge but it is still part of the lineup) And a possible Elf set atthe end of the year That makes 4 impulse, 6 sets, 2 battlepacks, a calender, a chess set and a possible other set. A BIG lot if you ask me. ou haven't shown me unfair it is, you've shown me ho lucky we are compared to last year Batbrick Away! Quote
iamded Posted June 5, 2008 Posted June 5, 2008 Not to mention the Impulse sets and those smaller sets are (in my opinion) great for army building and if you want more Castle sets, you can stock up on them! That's gonna be what empties my wallet by Christmas. ~Peace Quote
WhiteFang Posted June 5, 2008 Posted June 5, 2008 I must agreed that the current Castle theme is burning a big hole in my pocket since last year. I been stocking up multiple sets of what Batbrick had mentioned. And it's really making me spend less on other themes. However, the current castle theme is a great revival, compared to the KK era. Therefore, I always welcome more sets on the current theme. It may be hard for us, to collect all or stock up. But, these will always give us more options to choose. Most importantly, this theme is not restricted to a few sets for us to choose. However, I will love to see more buildings compared to vehicles. I think I have enough for that. Quote
Stash2Sixx Posted June 5, 2008 Posted June 5, 2008 Hey SDPIRATE, You think the $200 Chess set is expensive, just wait til the new LARGE (and I mean BIG) Star Wars playset is released later this year! No matter what, and forgive me here, "Nobody can make everyone happy all of the time, NEVER!" You know what I mean? LEGO releases a KILLER line up this year, and people are complaining? I don't understand. Would you rather we go back to Knight's Kingdom? The new Harry Potter movie comes out in November right? Would you rather that Harry Potter replace the castle line as it has done so many times? I love it. No wait...I LOVE IT!!!! We got some solid (new) factions this year (and if I count the Dragon faction). There were two decent size boats which are pretty cool for MOCing. There were also many sets that had a price point of $20 or less, and that is something LEGO is getting better at. And, TLC has even hinted at an entirely new faction for next year, which would be awesome. Just as I Scream Clone said, Castle is not the only line this year. Agents is taking off, the Coast Guard stuff is nice, Speed Racer did fairly well, Batman just dropped, plus all the new Creator sets, and then the Clone Wars and Star Wars Large... I think LEGO has done a VERY good job with the Castle line this year. Quote

I already have Agents, I already have Batman, I already have Speed Racer, and I just found the new Castle! It was great, especially when Vader found the battle wagon what, six months ago? Anyway, four Castle sets, a huge Chess set, and a great Advent Calendar, in addition to a whole slew of Impulse Sets is a small thing to ask. Besides, elves in Brickmaster? I, for one, am quite content with 2008... Quote
commanderbly42 Posted June 5, 2008 Posted June 5, 2008 Although there have been less castle sets this year, as mentioned above, TLC makes up for it with some great Star Wars, Coast Guard, and Agents sets (among others). And besides, the Castle line up of this year still hasn't reached me yet. Quote

Castle's a must, as well as those four batman's. I concur. There are those who collect all types of Lego, then there are those who collect theme specific that isn't Castle, then there are us Castle collectors. I stick to Castle, putting that top on my priorities list, with a few other sets (like a Star Wars battle-pack or Agents set, mainly for the figs) coming in later. And then there are the super Castle fans, who collect tons of Castle sets and absolutely nothing else. Man, I wish I had the money to be one of them. ~Peace Quote

Tom_castlefan Posted June 21, 2008 Posted June 21, 2008 I don't think it needs more - after all, too much of a good thing is usually bad for you (or your wallet, at least) However, I hope they stick with the fantasy theme - very good in my opinion. I don't want it to just fizzle out like vikings, I would love to see it going strong for the years to come. Quote
Dwarvenlord Posted June 23, 2008 Posted June 23, 2008 I think the viking theme wasn't a good theme (better then KK2, though). The reason why i think this is because there are only two things that says that it were actually vikings: the longboat and the shields. All the other weren't typically viking... However, I hope TLC is going to make more Dwarf-related sets and perhaps those cool Elves ... Quote
Dovchenko Posted June 24, 2008 Author Posted June 24, 2008 I feel like I'm playing everyone short here. I do like Clone Wars, but I'm worried it will be another Speed Racer. Some people thought the movie was good, sure. But overall it was poorly recieved. If Clone Wars is poorly recieved, I don't know how interested I would be. I guess Castle DOES have enough, with the chess set and various sets. Seeing as this issue's easily resolved, let's twist the idea a little bit... if LEGO had added more, do you think it would have been a wise decision (to make castle galore like last year had?) or would it have fizzled?
