For this competition I wanted to build a bike around these wheels that I got in a bargain eBay set a while ago.

I wanted to keep to a small build with a few decent functions.

I wanted to build Kaneda from Akira’s bike. It has a really long wheelbase and hub centre steering with a weird opening front faring.

I also wanted to build a bike with a radial engine, so I’ve decided to combine the two and build a long, low bike with a large radial engine and hub centre steering.

Ive started off with this hub centre steering setup.

Wheel and rims are right ones.

Will that fork hold the load, on bottom there is just half stud axle in connector. I'm afraid, that it will slide out under motorbike mass. Not even thinking about playability.

Yeah I agree, this is literally me hanging it together so I can get it working.

Andy perhaps bent liftarms could do the job...

Yeah. If I can make some sort of knuckle on the end of a bent lift arm that could work.

I suppose that bent liftarms 4 x 4 would replace gray connectors...does solution close to wheel with black connectors has to be with angle that you choose, or 90° angle is acceptable?

I want to avoid making the swing arm too bulky and blunt so definitely not 90 degrees. I’ll be investigating the huge pile of bionicle technic parts I have acquired as there are all sorts of curved lift arms in it.
I have a propensity to overbuild and make large Mocs so I’m trying to keep this bike more concise.

Colour wise, I’m going to try and use existing stuff I have rather than buy a load of bits.

all help is gratefully appreciated.
I bought a huge box of bionicles last year for 20 euros, it contained over 30 full bionicle characters so I have huge amounts of all the weird bits they come with. I think I’ll try to use loads up on this.

That is a deal; here where i live (private) people who sell used sets are often more expensive than (example) Mueller store...and when you point that out then you got all possible negative feedback...like you are not democratic etc... Last summer both my wife and me decided that I'll probably buy only special needed parts for my MOCs that I plan to keep assembled (or evolution of those but will keep them). Unfortunately motorbikes do not fit my scale despite I wanted to recreate my grandfather's bike...

Simplified front end and rear swing arm/drive shaft assembly.

I spent a bit of time trying to simplify the front swing arm and hub and have ended up changing the hub to make it less bulky and using a lift arm.

I’ve built a rear hub with shaft drive built in.

the rear suspension has to pop up into a high position when the front fairing lifts up.

Update:

I had an unsuccessful attempt at building a radial engine and started putting a longitudinal inline three cylinder in the bike, then I decided to persevere and spent some time over the last couple of days building a 6 cylinder radial engine and then rebuilding the chassis around it.
The engine was really tricky to align the array of cylinders and make a crank and conrod system that worked. I’ve ended up with a crank moving a  pulley wheel with the pistons attached to it. The pulley wheel is not allowed to rotate as the con rods would foul on each other so it has a system of floating sliding squares to allow it to move but not rotate.

So now I have a radial engine powered cyberpunk drag bike with hub centre steering and a two speed gearbox.
Next is the opening clamshell canopy and link up the flex cable steering.

This radial engine is a masterpiece!

I am asking myself how it could look in a further historical airplane Moc:excited:

Now the hard part of it, make the direction work proprely!

Something tells me that when turning in the "pull" direction of the flex it will be ok, but when needing to push it....

Good luck with it!

Thanks!

As I was building it I was mentally pricing up the parts to make four and put them on a huge bomber.

I think I’ll be putting way more support along the flex cable. It worked fine when there wasn’t a massive engine in the way but I’ll have to build a really small steering box to get it to work. I plan on speeder bike style handlebars.

@MinusAndy Can you use two flex cables, 1 on either side, so there is always 'pull' when activating the steering? Might save you loads of headache...

Edit: That radial engine is indeed fantastic, with your permission I can see myself using this design in the future somehow

Hmm. I shall look into using 2 cables. I’ll see if I can get one on the back of the hub.

Cheers! feel free to use the radial engine. It looks nice staggered by a stud between each cylinder too, which could really suit some planes.

Very nice progress so far, I was hoping this contest would create some futuristic designs with overly large engines as well :laugh_hard:

And those wheels are just a flex...Damn.

I like it! The radial engine is very unique, as is the steering and suspension. The flex system is sure handy in motorcycles! I have already used up my only two cables on my bike.

Indeed some excelent stuff! Are you still going for Akira look?

Yeah but more in terms of the concept of the long wheelbase and a kind of opening clamshell with a really low seat. I haven’t designed the bodywork yet so I’ll see where I end up

I've drawn a heck of a lot of inspiration from your design with this.  I'd always intended to go with a Cyberpunk/Akira style bike myself, since i first saw the competition posted. But i did figure i wouldn't be the only one to take a similar approach. I'd like to think there's still enough difference between the two designs though.

I'm incredibly impressed with how you've managed to fit so many working features, into the slightly smaller scale. And your radial engine is a work of art. I know i may sound biased, but i think this is my favourite entry so far, as i love the whole futuristic concept approach.  Can't wait to see where you take it.  :classic:

Thanks man.

I’ve been sketching some bodywork ideas and got the steering working fine with the flex cable. I have to work out a gear shifter mechanism  and see where the bodywork ends up.
