The Hi-Res images just released hours ago, and I'm already thinking of mods after reviewing them. Overall, I think the X-Wing has some of the best proportions although it's a bit smaller--but not by much.

One of the first things that stuck out to me was the parts for the engine intakes. I'm assuming they're new and look to be roughly proportional to the old engine parts used on all the X-Wings prior to 75218. I don't know if it's a new part or not, but the closest I could find in stud.io was a 4 wide although the part in the upcoming set is a 3 or a 3.5 wide.

Another interesting bit to note here is the apparent lack of rubber bands for the S-foils. Reminds me of Mike Psiaki's design for his X-Wing MOCs, and he happens to be working for LEGO now. Convenient?

I had an idea of how to improve the intakes but was concerned about the internal diameter of the new part. However, upon looking at close ups, it's obvious a 1 x 2 plate will fit in there without clipping the outer wall of the cylinder. So, here's my idea using the 4 wide part as a substitute. The new part looks to be a happy medium between a 4 and 3 wide.

I've already got some other ideas to try when I get my hands on the set, such as the canons, how high the astromech is seated, the landing gear, and the boxy backside, but wanted to start a thread for others to share what they've come up with as it releases. Feel free to contribute! :classic:

Having bought the X-Wing a few days ago, a minor modification I'd suggest is replacing one of the white 1x1 plates on the sides of the cockpit (near Luke's arm) with a white rounded 1x1 w/shaft (seeing as there aren't any square ones, as far as I know) that you can attach a black 1x1 U-clip to for a semi-functional targeting computer that fits the scale.

Very nice suggestion, and please share any pictures of it when have it assembled!

As of now, I have no clue it that panel part fits into the wheel face as I suggested it might in the introductory post. I actually reworked the last system scale X Wing with this new set and made an almagamation of the two. Pretty happy with the result.

Yeah, the wheel face can't hold those panel parts there, there's not enough space. I'm thinking something might work using the technic axle hole through the middle. An illegal but somewhat nice looking solution could be to wedge a 1x2 tile through the middle with a 1x1 tile through the top 2 studs.

That building technique was used structurally in the empire state building 21046, so it could be argued it is no longer illegal.

I agree it would be a good solution, and even placing a rod through the hole, and placing 1x1 tiles either side between the studs would allow for them to space out more and almost span the whole engine, without a gap. And it would also make the vertical 1x1 tile go higher as well.

I haven’t built the set for myself yet but did some modifications and colour changes in Studio. It’s supposed to be a cheap mod but I think the rear end could do with being rebuilt so that it’s less chunky, I might try that one day. I also did some instructions and shared the Studio model, added them to my 75218 X-Wing mod page, just scroll to the bottom.

The engine intakes are so simple yet effective, I'll be doing that when I receive mine. I'm also brainstorming ways to lessen the gap between the wings, and to make them less wobbly. I think I have a solution but I need the set in-hand first to test it.
