Miragent Posted November 4, 2020 Posted November 4, 2020 (edited) Can someone help me understand why some Lego cars that are supposed to be highly detailed don't have the front seat side windows? Notable examples: Aston Martin 10262 VW Beetle 10252 Fiat 500 10271 Ford Mustang 10265 Mini Cooper MK VII 10242 Ferrari F40 10248 Are front seat side windows difficult to make? Am I supposed to pretend it's there, while it's not, for some reason I can't understand? I understand some cars aimed for the kids market can't have this level of the detail, but we are talking about 1000+ parts sets here. I super hate the fact they did not make all the windows so maybe someone can help me tolerate this "feature", or just help me to add windows to the above models and in general. JintaiZ Posted November 4, 2020 Posted November 4, 2020 (edited) I'm thinking that they're not really necessary and won't distract its looks. There isn't any easy way to add them either. Also TLG would have to make new side window pieces for every set. Edited November 4, 2020 by JintaiZ Quote
deraven Posted November 4, 2020 Posted November 4, 2020 They're there, just rolled-down. But seriously, yes, they're difficult because of the A-pillar and would likely detract from the aesthetic unless custom molds were done which seems unnecessary. Quote
howitzer Posted November 4, 2020 Posted November 4, 2020 Also, interior (which is more interesting in front, with steering wheel and all) is better visible when there's no window panel. Even the transparent ones block some visibility so no panel makes it more interesting to view. Quote
JintaiZ Posted November 4, 2020 Posted November 4, 2020 I think 10274 has windows on the sides. Quote

The Lego Group has also made custom molds to include side windows on all 2020 Speed Champions cars (aimed at 7+) and they are brilliant. Out of scale with city and minifigures, but beautiful. Imagine 2020 Speed Champions cars with no side windows and look how weird they look. On 11/4/2020 at 8:51 AM, deraven said: They're there, just rolled-down. "They're there, just rolled down" is a good one, thank you. It does makes sense and it's possibly the way TLG looks at it and wants us to look at it. However, it's to be taken in consideration when you are pushing the high level of detail we have now on 18+ 1000+ parts vehicles, that the absence of one or more window may become evident, and to some people it might make the model look incomplete. This is my feeling. I believe it's time we get all the windows on non Technic sets, or at least on 18+ sets, and if someone wants the "rolled down" look, he/she can remove the window as a mod so everybody's happy with the matter. This is my feeling. The lack of those side windows doesn't bother me at all, but I don't disagree with you on this either. If we think about older sets (with the exception of Technic where it's still the case) that didn't have windshield glass (just the A pillars and maybe roof defining the area) or the old trans-clear 1x2 bricks stacked up there instead of a proper windscreen, those wouldn't fly now, especially in this range. Maybe we're in that transition again now with the side windows and we'll start to see that become the norm. I disagree with the point on Speed Champions, however. I DO think they look good, but they're done with a single full windscreen piece that is then printed or stickered for the bodywork. If something on this scale of these 10+ sets were done that way, can you imagine it just being a huge printed transparent piece wrapping around the front and sides? I guess something in-between might be OK. With the new 10274, for example, I think it looks like until you open the doors. Then you have just the glass sticking up with a tile on top when it should have more bodywork/frame around it. With other vehicle makes it would a lot worse than with the 1959 Cadillac, but maybe if they had a bit of printing on the transparent piece for the frame (like they do on some of the windscreens) it could look OK. Well on Speed Champions cars a full windscreen + side windows + A pillars mold was used. That can be done on a small car(with success), not on a huge 10274 where it would look bulky and not Lego. Proper side window molds need to be done if that is the case of big sets. 1 hour ago, deraven said: With the new 10274, for example, I think it looks like until you open the doors. Good point. Fingers crossed they make some well made window molds so that we don't always have to pretend it's there, or rolled down. They have invested the money to make unique molds for a 7+ product line, I hope they are going in this direction for other themes too or at least for non Technic 18+ sets. Quote
