I was bored, and decided to make this in LDD

(not imported from cad, just lots of carefully adjusting hinge angles and copy/paste)

dodecahedron.jpg

Perhaps it could be very useful as part of a space station?

or a moonbase biosphere?

ancient alien artifact of ultimate power?

LDD annoyingly did not allow many hinges to connect, so they're left sitting nearby the real locations, simple enough to fix if you acually buy one....

I was suprised at the price, seems high?

LDD

small variant

Well I guess the main thought to take away from this is, that It is possible to make those cool geometric things, without needing too many specialized(rare) technic connectors. You just need lots and lots of beam plates....

i'm just not sure if you can create this shape in reality, honestly. the reason why some didn't connect may have something to do with the angles of the sections....

Did some teaking since first upload and got more hinges into alignment...

The shape itself (Dodecahedron) is fine.

Biggest reason why some hinges dont want to connect is I positioned the bricks using LDD's built-in hinge rotation tool, so the angles are not all exactly identical and a few areas aren't lined up just right.

When doing this in real bricks, that's not an issue since the act of clicking things together will push things into alignment.

100 bucks? Damn! That's quite expensive, not quite what I'd pay for this seemingly simple yet very complicated decoration! It is very cool though, I'd never have the patience to make something like that. It does look very cool, and would get a lot of people quite amazed if I had that on display in my room. Might even make a good soccer ball.

Actually, its 50$USD, not 100, but thats still a lot. Though really with a 420 piece count I suppose that makes sense. I guess playability is a major factor in percieved value. (maybe I should add a few minifigs  )

Anyway, I did make a smaller version, which came out to 25$USD. Half the price is a bit better. And even tho smaller probably just as worthwhile in terms of impressive geometric-ness.

Take a look at this:

Ok, it´s not the full shape and not exactly the same panels used, but close.

Well I'm happy to report that the shape does indeed work.

I redid the angles very carefully, and now have one where all the hinges managed to align and fit correctly.

Here's the best version (small sphere)

Guess Ill edit the old links too..

Thanks for the pic Holodoc

Maybe I'll try that kind someday, it looks fairly possible....

I was searching for this thread here, before posting my smaller dodekahedron in this thread Advanced building technics. Did not find this thread here though.

I saw this one first, but used hinged plates to make pentagon (five-sided) shape.

There are several more methods to make the shape out of Lego, at least what I've seen on the web. But the green half-dome shown here is really nice.

Good to see that it does indeed all fit together. So, when can we see it in the brick?

Oh, I meant 100 NZD. I probably should have stated that.
