There is the RCX, which has a tiny fraction of the EV3 brick's capability - and nevertheless, even official sets are often - line followers. As much as I like retro - as much do I like progress. I know that the EV3 can do so much more, but what I find ... a little - only a little - discouraging is that TLG still goes the same old. Extremely more powerful brains following a line.
