TeddytheSpoon Posted June 7, 2020 Posted June 7, 2020 (edited) These days, supermarkets are pretty rare, wiped out by the convenience of delivery droids or the deals of the markets - both above and below board. But for those organics who can't afford droids and who don't like the market hustle, supermarkets like mine are something of a safe haven. There is one thing that's even rarer than a supermarket, though: a supermarket with an organic till clerk. Clerk droids are so cheap compared to a fleet of organic workers. Trouble is, when they go pop and you can't afford a fresh new one, you need someone to operate desks. That's why I hired Ruv'i. All I needed was a couple of rotations to repair the droid myself, so she was a short-term hire. Well, the droid has been fixed for weeks now. But I can't get rid of Ruv'i. Everyone likes her too much. I can't think why. Some people tell me the droids are soulless and not easy to talk to. Droids aren't programmed to care how you're doing today or wish you a happy Life day. Sounds great if you ask me. But some people - most people, even - seem to like that. Even the imps like her, and they don't like anyone! I've never seen a queue at the other desks since she started. Not that I care. I bet you I've got the only organic supermarket clerk for at least 30 parsecs. It's like a freak show. Ruv'i isn't a worker - she's an asset. And for that she's better than any clerk droid. Eurobricks Economy Contest - A Diamond in the Rough by TeddytheSpoon, on Flickr I had a few ideas for this contest, and the idea to do a supermarket stood out the most, especially with the story I had in my head. In recent times, the importance of those who operate the tills and stack the shelves at supermarkets and shops has really come to the fore, and this build is something of a tribute to that. That said, trying to make a supermarket with that trademark Star Wars aesthetic was no easy feat! Edited June 7, 2020 by TeddytheSpoon Quote
deraven Posted June 7, 2020 Posted June 7, 2020 This is wonderful. The concept and execution are both excellent, and it's a great write-up about Ruv'i and the whole situation. All the aspects of the build are suitably alien but still recognizable and relatable. Great build! Quote
Ross Fisher Posted June 8, 2020 Posted June 8, 2020 I really like the concept. Bright and original, and quite a sweet story. It's a side of life in the SW galaxy that, by sheer necessity, must exist. And yet you never see it. It's a fun little build. The render makes it look a little bit too clean, though. And I have a personal beef with Stormtroopers and Jedi shopping in the same store. That's on me, though. I know you're playing it for comedy. Quote
TeddytheSpoon Posted June 8, 2020 Author Posted June 8, 2020 Thanks for the kind words guys! 2 hours ago, Ross Fisher said: The render makes it look a little bit too clean, though. I agree, that's one of the drawbacks of building like this, though it's more by necessity for me. Let's say the cleaning droid has just finished his weekly lap and just went out of shot! Quote
