Hidden Side - 'official' connection to Monster Fighters?

I like it when LEGO has connections between themes and enjoy including subtle (or not so subtle) references to these in my layout. I'm not talking about TLM connections here, but more like the story links we had between Atlantis, Pharaoh's Quest, Alien Conquest and Dino or call backs to older themes in the CMF series (Vampire Bat being a servant of Lord Vampyre and chief Bat Monster).

Anyway, I read somewhere about rumours suggesting the town of Newbury is built on the land where the Monster Realm used to be, and that energy from the Moon Stones awakened the ghostly forces from Hidden Side. Unfortunately, I cannot remember where I read it and if it was an official connection.

Does anyone know anything about this? Is this something final or even something LEGO considered during concept, or is it a fan theory?
