How to test 12 v train motor?

Hi,

I have an old 1982 12 v train motor (black with 3 holes and not removable pin) that hasn't been used for ages. I want to test it but I don't have a lego 12 v transformer. How can I test it? Is it ok if I connect 2 wires with 12 v DC (from a normal transformer) directly to the bottom contacts?

Thanks! I've tested it with a normal transformer and it worked fine! Engine OK! No strange noise!
