Lego Digital Designer Import

I am new this forum and to Lego Digital Designer, LDD.  I would like to create objects in a possible different program and then import my designs.  Would someone please let me know which file types can be imported into the Lego Digital Designer, LDD program?  I tried .jpg, .png and .stl and was unsuccessful.  Any and all assistance would be appreciated.  Thank you in advance.

LEGO Digital Designer is getting phased out more or less. I still use it quite a bit but then import them using stud.io that is becoming more and more the standard. Stud.io also has additional modules for decals / stickers etc.
