Alternative to Rechargable Batteries for PF

I have the impression that lego built the PUP controllers (the normal hub and the technic hub)/ battery box with modularity in mind. You can easily replace the battery compartement of both battery boxes with another one, so maybe we'll get a rechargeable battery as "addon" to the normal receiver. That would keep the cost for the battery itself down since the receiver etc. would not be included.

Regarding the adapter cable: lego announced at a fan event that they are thinking about making an adapter cable but they aren't sure how far compatibility should go (PF/PUP motors, WeDo/WeDo 2.0 sensors).

I never used these battery boxes much for Technic models due to the 7.4V output. They seem fine until you compare them with a full 9V source. I prefer to just run wires to an AC source instead, although that doesn't really work for trains or RC models. I have an old Radio Shack transformer with adjustable voltages and modular connectors with bare leads, which I soldered to some broken 9V wires. I also use the old 9V speed regulators and control centers for some things, but they have current limits that are easy to hit if you run multiple motors at once (or a single 9V RC motor).

PUP won't help, it is just another AAA battery box only it's supped up with built in bluetooth.

This is actually a very good point that I hadn't thought about. Indeed, PUP doesn't solve the LiPo discontinuation problem at all with their battery boxes... 

 

To be fair: Modding a PUP batterybox so that it holds Lithium-ion cells or 3d printed and soldered cables isn't really the 'mainstream' solution either. For some of us however this might work pretty well, so I've included in the opening post

The PUP battery compartment definitely looks like it was designed to have a LiPo insert to replace the AAA holder, which is one of the things I hated about the design- if you have to take the batteries out, why buy a $50 insert? But now we'll never know.

Maybe the lipo replaces the complete lower part including the outer shell. That would make sense to me (and they could easily add a charging port at the outside). But who knows if it will happen.

Forgot that I would review it.

Yes it's here and it works very well for now.
Time will tell us about the quality of the lipo's inside.

At one point it's even better than the original cause they deliver an usb loader cable with it,
so you don't need an extra powersupply but can plug it in any phone loader.
