TomSkippy Posted April 9, 2019 Posted April 9, 2019 Apparently Johnny has several ships and potential skippers participating in the Cup. Johnny has no idea. Here's my class 1 entry based on the Galway Hooker boat from Ireland: Sangiovese Range: 2 Maneuver: 3 Firepower: 0 Crew: 0 Cargo: 3 Hull: 1 Super fun little build, I'm happy with her curves, wake, and rigging. Honestly forgot how threading the foresails makes them all crooked/wavy... I hate that. Also had to edit the sail color, my dye couldn't quite get it red enough, in person they are much less vibrant and a little lighter. Pros and cons. Let me know what you think! Quote
Professor Thaum Posted April 10, 2019 Posted April 10, 2019 I like the bow ! Well done. Let's go smuggling Quote
Roadmonkeytj Posted April 10, 2019 Posted April 10, 2019 You really have a nack for these small vessels! Well done! Quote
blackdeathgr Posted April 10, 2019 Posted April 10, 2019 Nice little vessel! Especially the hull, masts and rigging. Also nicely built base. If you can elaborate on the hull a bit more with photos (at the sides in particular) , it would be helpful to us all! Quote
TomSkippy Posted April 10, 2019 Author Posted April 10, 2019 @Professor Thaum You read my mind! Totally a smuggling vessel! @Roadmonkeytj Thanks! I'll try my hand at bigger ships someday, but I like that small ones can avoid difficult sections (like the beakhead) and be designed/built in a couple days! @blackdeathgr Check out my flickr for more pics. Strangely I've already scrapped her for my next build … I'll try to describe as best as I can... The tumblehome is made with 1x2 hinge bricks and 1x2 - 1x4 brackets, they have the 2x2 tiles and 1x2 plates on them (which allows a small amount of inward tilt). There is an extra 1x1 side stud brick for the final 1x2 plate attached by the 1x6 tile on top (which is why it doesn't tilt as well as the rest of the tumblehome). The side curve is made from a hinge plate. The 1x2 inverted slope bricks are attached to a weird assortment of tiles so that the last one is offset... this is to allow the tile overhang to fit over the corner of the stern which is attached to the rest of the ship. The top of the sides slot into a 1x1x1 Corner Panel. There's a little bit of tension keeping everything together. Quote
Fraunces Posted April 11, 2019 Posted April 11, 2019 Very nice little boat, the curves are great as well as the presentation! Quote
Bodi Posted May 15, 2019 Posted May 15, 2019 Good work with the hull, I see some innovative techniques here, and I'm still trying to figure out how you've attached these plates to the hull pieces. I think the only weak point of build is the sails, but I understand it's sometime tricky to find an adequate cloth. Nice job overall. Quote
TomSkippy Posted May 16, 2019 Author Posted May 16, 2019 @Bodi Thanks! For attaching the plates I used the old 1x2 hinge bricks with 1x4 and 1x2 bracket plates. There’s not a ton of tilt from the hinge bricks, but just enough. Some of the side plates only have 1x1 contact with the brackets. I agree, the sails aren’t up to the standard set by the hull. They need more ironing, the Fore sails need a different approach to rigging, and the red doesn’t look great. I’ll keep improving! Quote
