Lighting ideas wanted for a MOC

I am planning to build a MOC of the XXXX Brewery here in Brisbane (very famous brewery). This brewery has a set of 4 red neon style X's on top of the building. These X's light up in sequence, none then 1 then 2 then 3 then 4 then back to none. Does anyone have any suggestions of a lighting option (either LEGO or 3rd party) that could provide (or be programmed to provide) the desired effect? (preferably with a way to control how long it goes before moving to the next step in the sequence)

Use an Arduino. Or a cheap knock-off one. They are very simple to use to program things like that.
