Brickmaster Posted April 7, 2008 Posted April 7, 2008 (edited) Well, I have found these bionicle playsets to be a very underrated theme. With them being on sale, I decided to pick some up. All of them. Half price. I started off with this one as it seemed kinda interesting, as I've already built the Toa Terrain Cralwer, and the other set seems simple. With this being said, still expect reviews of these sometime in the future >:-) I just got the shipment today after school. I got one box semi crushed. Here are all baggies and whatnot. Bag 1 gives you a plethora of minifigs - nice selection. And alittle scooter made out of a foot. Kinda nifty. Bag 2 builds the beasties. I like this guy, he had a nice building technique under that black shell. Heres a (dark) picture of the other guy. He has alot of moving parts, and his belly holds those weird ball things. His head is quite a cool peice. Now we get to the interesting stuff. The submarine thing. Here is the back base of it. You then proceed to cover it in technic and bionicle pieces. Now the front cockpit parts. After the base, you then again, cover it in technic and bionicle parts. You also build some lame arm things on each side, consisting of a blaster I got to work once, and a clumbsy arm. The red windscreen is so cool. I love trans red :-$ This thing is actually built like a ROCK. I accidently dropped the thing and nothing happened. It is increadibly sturdy, being built of strongly connected beams and blocks, then coated in a nice bio armor. It's a shame most of the form is from bio parts. But dang. I gotta admit, it looks nice. Here's the whole bamboozle. Tons of playability here. 6 figs, a scooter, 2 fierce beasties to ride, and a large sturdy submarine (which also has a back compartment). Not to mention more weapons than there are arms to equip them to. All in all, it gets an 8/10 from me. Right now, it's half price for 25 USD, and for 400 peices, and some rare elements (especially that nice trans red windscreen..) it's a great deal to me! Not to mention if the mini bio figs don't fit your fancy, there's still hope! You can modify their heads to fit a normal minifigure. Check the customization workshop for my thread for more info on that if interested ;-) Thanks for looking at my review. I know I love seeing during-build review pictures, so I tried to provide them again here *sweet* Edited April 7, 2008 by Brickmaster Quote
iamded Posted April 8, 2008 Posted April 8, 2008 After reading your other review, I had to check this one out. I find these under water Bionicle playsets to be... interesting, to say the least. It seems they tried to take Bionicle to minifig scale, but then they packed it with Bionicle parts to satisfy the Bionicle action figure fans. Oh well, the sub looks neat, the beasties look great, the scooter looks really nifty, and the figs are, well, I'm sure we could use them in some creative way. X-D Good for post-Apoc I suppose. Still, it's not a bad set, much more buyable at half price (let's see that happen to the Giant Castle Chess set X-D) and packed with a plethora of interesting and creative pieces. Thanks for this review, I think it deserves more attention, I was shocked when I saw it had no replies! Lookin' forward to seeing more from you! *y* ~Peace Quote
Hinckley Posted April 8, 2008 Posted April 8, 2008 Hey! Keep your Bionicle out of our Other Themes. :-P Thanks for the review, Brickmaster. I always wondered if these sets were worth it for the unique parts. After reading your review I may actually pick these up if I find them clearanced... Reviewing tip: You may want to check to see if your digital camera has a closeup setting. Your pics are a bit blurry and if you want more photography tips, check out my photography thread here for some light source tips... Great reviews! Thanks again! Quote
simonwillems Posted April 8, 2008 Posted April 8, 2008 Thank you for making a review of this set. I had not seen any other pictures of it than just the box-art ones until now. It looks as like a lot of technic is used for stability, and that's a good thing because the set won't fall apart so easily when playing with it. I am curious as to the functionality of the cannon, does it shoot well? And does it shoot the 6 pieces like a machine gun? Still, If I find this set at half price (and I mean that this set is given to me together with the amount of money it costs half price), I still would have my doubts whether to take it or not.... :-D No, this is not a Bionicle fan typing this post, as you can see, but I like the review nevertheless... goggleson Posted April 8, 2008 Posted April 8, 2008 i really like this review.Only thing is now I think bionicle is even more.. :-X Quote
Brickmaster Posted April 8, 2008 Author Posted April 8, 2008 The blaster thing is kindof tricky to use. You have to cover up a little hole to make the pump air tight, so that it gets a nice seal and shoots. I really only tried it afew times, but when I got it to work, It flew quite nicely. :-$ Quote

I like those black "tails" or what they are called. My experience with the blaster is that it works quite well. The trick when using it is to push the red part fast and swift, not slow. It does not require that much force, but speed indeed. I'm not sure how difficult it is to use for the smaller kids though. I am able to fire all six missiles fast and consistent one after the other, flying about 4 meters or more. I don't think the hole in the center of the red part is connected directly to the air chamber inside the blaster. At least I was able to make it shoot just as fine, while not covering this hole with my thumb (used two thumbs on the edges). I guess it's really not that practical to shot while it's mounted on this set though. Front Edited April 8, 2008 by Front Quote

Front Even with all 6 chambers loaded, and as swiftly as I could, which is pretty swift I may add, I couldn't get the thing to work :-$ Maybe the one in the Toa Terrain Crawler will have better results. Try the other one too, and then try bit of different "shooting styles", and try the red missiles from one in the other blaster. If you can't get them to work, the blaster may have a fault. I would suggest that you try and get some new missiles from costumer service. They may fit the blaster better, but well it could be the blasters too :'-( Quote
Shine Posted April 8, 2008 Posted April 8, 2008 Thanks for the review, Brickmaster. I always wondered if these sets were worth it for the unique parts. After reading your review I may actually pick these up if I find them clearanced...Actually, they're currently discounted on LS@H. Quote
Asuka Posted April 11, 2008 Posted April 11, 2008 Thank you for an interesting review, Brickmaster, although the set itself looks still pretty mediocre to me.... *thumbup* Quote
