We've been discussing what the younger children think of these new 4+ Pirate sets. He has a 4 year old daughter and I have a 4 year old nephew so both are the intended age for these sets, but both prefer the older SYSTEM sets.

Does anyone else know of a kiddie this age? If so what is their opinion of these 4+ sets?

Ed's very well educated daughter

Ahhhhhhhhh excellent! That lass is being brought up in the best way possible I see. Keep up the good work!

Oh, I will phes, I will ;) She always asks to build the set I got in a trade a few weeks ago, the Renegade Runner... she loves Pirate ships... it makes me so proud *satis* I can't wait for my new sets to come in... more on that in another post...

You haven't built your Renegade Runner yet? It seems you need a father/daughter build session!

Anyways, I've got Sea Monkeys as well. They're less fuss than fish as pets. Cleaning their tank is not a requirement. Just don't feed them the manufactured food and they'll eat up all the sludge themselves. They love it!

Oh we've built it at least five times now phes, its just she wants to build it again & again... I figure the next time we have a father/daughter build session, I will just leave it assembled on her dresser... :-D

We also have a fish, a betta, & we don't have to clean the tank but once a year (it is much cleaner than most other fish ;) )

How old is your daughter and does she have an opinion on the 4+ Pirate sets? She seems to really love the good old SYSTEM Renedage Runner, so she must be highly intelligent!

I'm glad you asked phes... She is four years old (turns five in July) & she absolutely despises the larger figs from the 4+ Pirates sets... I only have one set (7074 Skull Island, which I got for the wonderful price of $2.99) & after we built it (about 3 months ago), my daughter asked me where the "real" guys were (it made me so proud :$ ). I told her that the big guys were real guys (while biting my lip) & she sat there confused for a minute & told me two things... she said, & I quote:

1) "these aren't real guys, the hats can't come off",

2) "these guys don't fit in the spaceships or the jail daddy"

She was referring to many of the Star Wars ships I have ("Spaceships") & the 2 x 6 x 7 door with the bars ("jail"). She still doesn't see the big figs as 'real LEGO figs' because of those facts & she tells me everytime I ask what set she wants to build (pretty much every weekend). Typically it is a "Castle" or a "Pirate Ship" that she requests we build, & she has never requested to rebuild that 4+ set ever... we built the Renegade Runner & the Carribean Clipper last week & "battled" with them... it was fun :-D This weekend, it will be some MOCs (which technically should be called MD&MOCs, where 'MD&' stands for 'My Daughter &' ;) )...

& when she free-builds, she typically uses straight BRICKS & PLATES (hear that TLC?), she loves to use them, I believe, because they are so simple & easy to build with. All the big & speciality pieces just don't work for her...

& yes phes, she is intelligent...

This is wonderful news!

You've probably read in other threads but... I've got a 4 year old nephew who prefers my SYSTEM Pirate sets over his 4+ ones. He seems to be able to find more to do with them because they have greater functionality and more pieces in which he can move. Which means more rebuilding for me after he's done, but he seems to have a lot more fun.

Do you think we should start a thread about what the younger children think of these 4+ sets? I think it would be interesting if we got a broader range of their opinions.

She definetly seems more playability in the system sets... :)

I would be more than happy to contribute to it :-D Considering the target market for those "things" was 4+ years-old, I would have a perfect case study within my daughter ;)

From my observations the kiddies don't appear to care whether the pieces in the 4+ sets are bigger or not. Its the quality of the set itself that counts the most. These bigger pieces don't allow for designs to be as fun and interesting as the SYSTEM sets. That's probably their biggest downfall.

i think they are terrible! they are terrible pieces of plastic, they are not pirates, they are...(well, i think i musn't be rude)

Lego system pirates were the best legos, they were the first minifigs that hadn't got that stupid face with a stupid smile that had the old legos(except standart soldiers), they had very expresive faces, and they were very funny. The actual pirates have a terrible design

Well mister_phes, she educated me a bit this weekend, look & see what she built (with little help from me, I might add)...

malsship01.jpg

Underneath each red & green square is a cannon... she decided that those needed to be 'underneath the floor' so as to create a nice 'walking floor' for the 'guys' to walk around on... it makes a father proud... :$

All I did was help her with putting the red sails on (that she picked out from the choices we had, actually they were the closest color to pink, which is her fav ;) ):

As you can tell from the pics, I was busy with a few other ships at the same time (although there are more to come ;) ;) ;) )... Also phes, building a Carribean Clipper with no center section makes it look too wide (kinda like a circle or a 'fat' ship)... needless to say, it just didn't look right, at least my daughter thought it was 'too fat', & we quit before investing too much time in it... oh well... Little Miss Mal & I had a fun weekend :-D

Well, my brother doesn't fall into that age group, but he did buy his first LEGO set after 15+ years yesterday (a 3451) at a local TRU. There he saw the 4+ Pirate sets. This morning he asked me "Do you know the current Pirate sets? What are those strange figs???" And after I told him that the original Pirate theme was cancelled after 1997 all he said was " :/ "

Good work Ed! Now I know not to get 2 Caribbean Clipper hull sections to use as a ship! However! Perhaps if turned upside down they could be used as roofs of Pirate Hovels. I've been playing Tropico 2 (won't be much help if you've never heard of that game) and some of the Pirates there create hovels with up turned ship hulls as roofs and it looks very interesting. MOC inspiring in fact!

And all I can say is: Little Miss Mal is a truly gifted child!

i remember seeing the catalogue of 1998, the first catalogue without pirates wich i see.

how awful :(

I remember that tragic day when I read the 1998 catalog for the first time. :') I skimmed through it once and wondered how could I possibly miss the Pirates section - since thats what I was specifically looking. So I skimmed through it again... Still no Pirates... So I had a more thorough look... Then the shocking truth dawned upon me! The Pirate theme was no more! Oh why a sad moment that was.

Fortunately that occured sometime in 2000, so I had stopped collecting Pirate sets for about 7 years. But it was still fairly traumatic!

I happen to know a 7 year-old who collected all but the large ship of the 4+ sets and guess what? He loves them! My opinion differs, but although they sell well to a certain audience, Lego would be better off getting younger kids hooked on minifigs early on or putting 4+ in the same league as Jack Stone and some of the early creator sets (the ones with Creator figs)...i.e. the bin! :-X

What does he think of the SYSTEM Pirate LEGO sets? Does he own any?

He's too young to have any and most likely doesn't know they exist - the oldest ranges he's heard of are Bionicle and "the Rock Raider" X-D. Actually I might have brought his attention to the BSB and SES through idle chat but he wasn't too bothered - he's a Bionicle and HP boy...

In fact there are only 3 people I know in person who have any System Pirate at all; 2 had a small set each and gave Lego up years ago and the other had all the Imperial Soldiers sets and Wolf Pack/Dark Forest sets, except the CC and I've lost contact with him...he's got a pretty fortune there!

I see a great Moc builder rising!

I think the 4+ is great untill the child is about 7, but then they are so hard to resell i think.

For me they're not interesting, as most pieces are not usable...

Then it's your job to make sure he does know the SYSTEM Pirate sets exist - he should most certainly like them more than the 4+ poop.

Do they still enjoy it? If not perhaps you could get them to donate it to you. If so then tell them to get their butts to this forum!
