Nebulaire Posted April 6, 2018 Posted April 6, 2018 (edited) Hello, I'd like to present you my first Lego technic project. I've done already some MOD but I had never started a project from scratch. I want to build a reach steacker, just like those used in rail/road terminals. My work is to manage road/rail trains, I see reach steackers every day, that's why I choose to build one. I have started with the chassis and the front axle (don't mind about the color of parts) : I need to build the rear axle. I've order few parts to move on. I also need to do some research about the position of the motor and the number of cylinders. I'm intend to motorize it with one XL for propulsion and one M for direction. Nebulaire Posted April 9, 2018 Author Posted April 9, 2018 (edited) My first chassis was too weak, so i decided to rebuilt one this week-end : This time, the chassis is strong, especialy the rear axle support : This allows a good clearence for steering I was able to mount an XL for driving and a M for steering : I have this sepcification for the engine and its placement on the chassis Update coming soon ! I used to stack lift arms too, but vertical / horizontal gives better strength. Quote

Nebulaire Posted April 13, 2018 Author Posted April 13, 2018 Yesterday, I finished the rear axle and the steering : Fit quickly an IR recepteur and a battery box. It drives ! It was pleasant to play a bit with it. Steering is a bit tricky since M motor is direcly connected to the steering rack. I think I need to rebuilt the rear axle to make it more simple but stronger and to reduce the speed of the m motor. Quote

Bartybum Posted April 14, 2018 Posted April 14, 2018 Steering should be like this: motor -> worm gear -> clutch gear -> gear reduction -> steering gear That way the steering will be safe from damage and slow enough that you can re-centre it. Quote

Bublehead Posted May 24, 2018 Posted May 24, 2018 (edited) Let me start by saying, great work and you show lots of determination and you have a good picture of where you want to go. If I may, let me point you to a resource that some don’t think about all the time but it can really help you out. The instructions for all the old technic sets are online, so find a similar vehicle and download the instructions and just page through them and look at how some things are built and see if you can find ways to apply your ideas using some of their techniques... And even if you don’t use them, you build up your knowledge of how Lego designers have solved problems in the past. Kind of a quick way of getting familiar with different ways of doing similar things like suspensions, steering gear, gearboxes and the like.
