Kai NRG Posted February 6, 2018 Posted February 6, 2018 It was a fine day, just slightly overcast, when Guy's Uncle and his trio of children set out from their forest tree house to knuckle down to the business that actually brought them to Celestia. As usual, Uncle was all ready to go and tapping the ground with his cane while Vance still carefully adjusted his hair, Amira tried the effects of three different outfits, and Bob began to yawn himself awake. But one by one they came clambering down, all more or less ruffled in temper according to the degree in which the tricky descent from their lofty sleeping place had messed up their hairdos. "Dear me!" Amira exclaimed crossly, glancing at Vance's buccaneering get-up. "We're hunting for a flower, not a jaguar. What's with all the weapons?" "Always be prepared!" Vance retorted, giving Amira's sketchbook and chalk a rather scornful glance. "Well, Dad, what's the plan?" Uncle cleared his throat. "We'll be taking a canoe down this brook and see what we can find." "A canoe? Great! Oh, is it that olive green one in the water! Aw Dad, so nice of you to pick such a cool color!" "I picked it," Bob remarked gleefully. Vance began to retract his opinion. "Oh well, I mean, olive green isn't tremendous, just better than..." "Save your breath for rowing," his father broke in. "Rowing?!?! Oh you dear Dad, you know I could never row. I've got to have the dramatic explorer's pose on the front of the canoe. And besides, imagine what it would do to my hair!" Uncle raised an eyebrow and glanced in Amira's direction, but she started talking before he could even open his mouth. "Don't even think about it! I'd look like a fright!" Bob grinned. "I'd love to row, Dad, but..." A chorus of "No!" "Nope!" and "Un-uh!" drowned out the rest of Bob's sentence. So Uncle rowed, Vance stood up in classic explorer pose until his sword arm tired (two minutes and eleven seconds by Uncle's watch), Bob bounced from side to side splashing his hand in the water and wetting all within reach, and Amira sat in the back of the canoe sketching away and growling every time Bob's movements messed up her lines. At last Vance spotted an old ruined structure on the banks, which gave renewed strength to his sword arm. He stretched it out dramatically and made Amira scramble over the side the best she could and take a sketch before anyone else disembarked. That important task having been completed - or at least, Amira pretending that that important task had been completed - they all left the canoe and approached the crumbling ruins. As they passed under a broken archway, they caught sight of the most beautiful orchid anyone of them had ever seen... which, since none of them had ever seen an orchid before, may not be saying very much. Uncle stared at the brightly colored flower, raising his eyebrows. The numbers in his account were prettier than this, he thought. Then he remembered how sorely those numbers had been depleted, and determined then and there that he'd make this orchid worth something. An overview shot: Another overview: And one last picture of the orchid - which may or may not look like a real orchid, I'm not really very sure what an orchid looks like. Of course I googled it, but somehow that wasn't extremely helpful. I'm not much of a flower person, actually. Recognizing dandelions is about as far as I get. This is a would-have-been-Ch. I Cat C build, but I finished it rather on the late side. C&C welcome! Thank you for looking and a special thank you if you read the story! Quote
Bodi Posted February 7, 2018 Posted February 7, 2018 Funny story. An olive green canoe, really cool. The archway ruin is great and the orchid is very well built as well, and I like how you've portrayed the thoughts of Uncle's children. Quote
Roadmonkeytj Posted February 7, 2018 Posted February 7, 2018 Very creative cropping it made the scene seem like much larger great story telling and impressive flower. How did you accomplish the lean in the arch ... Or is it just a photo trick? Quote
Professor Thaum Posted February 7, 2018 Posted February 7, 2018 I second Bodi ! really nice one, too bad you missed the deadline Quote
Garmadon Posted February 7, 2018 Posted February 7, 2018 Nice build and story, Kai! - I particularly like that upside-down canoe shot The ruins and vegetation are really well done too, and, whether it looks like an orchid or not, that flower definitely isn't bad! Quote
Capt Wolf Posted February 8, 2018 Posted February 8, 2018 Love the trans-clear water, and Amira's changing hair piece is a great effect! Nice intro to Uncle's kids. Quote

Elostirion Posted February 12, 2018 Posted February 12, 2018 I'd definitely say this is one of the best orchids we have seen in the whole challenge. Wonderful work. The whole MOC is fantastic, the ruins, the flowers around, the water, the canoe and your group are splendid. As is the story (and yes, I did read it - and it gave me quite a few chuckles actually). I am quite sad you did not make the deadline, but with great MOCs that may often be the case. Quote
