Arkeeos Posted January 22, 2018 Posted January 22, 2018 Just finished off the body and head of my mini figure scale AT-AT and wondering if its possible to have the legs be 1 wide, i was looking at other AT-ATs such as cavegods and jhaelegos and saw that they all use 2 wide legs, i assume for stability. i also found this superb hoth moc, with 1 wide AT-AT legs but i wasn't a fan on the anti studs at the back of legs, ideally i want to retain the clean look of cavegods yet have the slimness of those. so, just wondering if this is even possible in the first place. dmaclego Posted January 22, 2018 Posted January 22, 2018 If your model is to be similar in size to Cavegod's, you won't be able to have legs just one stud thick. Even with two stud thick legs such huge models are extremely unstable. The ones from Hoth MOC are much smaller and even they have, effectively, two stud thick knees (including the exposed knee joints) and upper thighs. There are, of course, some simple SNOT techniques that would allow you to avoid visible anti-studs but in my opinion these would weaken the legs even more. Anyway, good luck with your project! Quote

There are Technic beams 1x15 in the upper, tapered part of thighs; the rest is just brick built. Also, the vertical 1x8 tiles on the front and rear part of each leg are somewhat structural, joining the bricks. That's not much, of course, but ANY reinforcement is important when the model is so tall and, by definition, so unstable. Quote
anothergol Posted January 23, 2018 Posted January 23, 2018 (edited) But have you measured the leg's thickness of the "original" model to match 1 brick thickness at minifig scale? Well first "minifig scale" is subjective & has a pretty wide range, going from a scale to its double, thus pretty much a brick to 2 bricks. Second, Cavegod's model is enormous, as well as this other (IMHO even better) one (edit: I see dmaclego already replied above). I know the AT-AT's legs are thin, but so are these, they don't appear abnormally thick to me. Well, compare them to Bandai's model kit (you won't find better than Bandai's kits as for accuracy). 1-brick thickness would be way too thin. Edited January 23, 2018 by anothergol Quote
