The party heads off through the streets of Eubric, thankfully the Ji Pei palace being only a block away and the Tritech Company adjacent, they didn't have any issue navigating the way undetected by any patrolling guards. Upon knocking at the door of the Tritech Company they are quickly led inside to the main laboratory. The lab has several staff who are hurriedly packing components and equipment into giant crates, Lead Engineer Monalisa Gioconda greets the heroes.

"Well this is quite the surprise, didn't think most of you lot were sticking your heads above ground these days!"

Karie takes a seat a little ways away from Lind. She motions the bartender over. "Falana Wine, if you've got any." Karie looks to Lind. She felt cold looking him over. Lind was always a wild card. She never really trusted him, but with everything going on, it was best to have her bases covered. She knew Lind at least looked up to her, and Karie had tried her damnedest to leave a positive impression on the newbie hero. Even just one last talk with Lind could maybe help him out.

Lind took a moment to respond. In the...how long had it been? A year? Longer...? since he had been part of Heroica, he had had a lot of time for self-reflection. A lot of time to reflect on his mistakes. Ever since that one moment he didn't want to let himself think about, on their journey to kill Immortalis, when his careless words - and actions - had nearly broken the party apart - he had been trying to change himself for the better. Trying to fix the mess he'd let himself slide into.

It had been slow, but at least most of the party hadn't wanted to kill him, by the end of that quest.

Most.

He'd been here, and there, since then. Sometimes backsliding. Sometimes taking a small step forward. He hoped he'd changed for the better.

But nobody'd here had been there to see that. He was still to everyone what he'd been at the end of that quest.

And, he deserved that.

Frankly, he was glad that anyone was still speaking to him, instead of just tip-toeing past him out the door.

He nodded. "Karie.

Yeah...been a really long time..."

IT had been a long time since Vindsval had heard that voice.  It was certainly one to insure mixed responses among the members of the hall.  He moves over to where the diminutive manling and mistress Karie sit.  

Something strong, large, and dark if you would Master Wolf.  This is a conversation to be had over wetted throat.

Greetings Whisperer. A strange coincidence to find you once again in our Path.  You have been long absent from the hall, and from company of those you find here.  What brings you here, now, and what do you know of the recent happenings.

Oh, but I do know one thing - there's an arbormage strike going on, right? 'Cause I kept having to find alternate paths around all the root bunches. Huge, white roots, completely blocking off whole sections of the tunnels. Never seen anything like them before. (And when you spend your whole childhood in a cave, you get to see a lot of different roots.)

Freakin' arbormages - don't they realize their strikes affect more than the Ziegfried flower beds?" He shook his head.

"I came back two weeks ago - spent a year or so abroad focusing on "self-improving" - but when I peeked into the Hall, the Board was blanker than I've ever seen it. So, I went off and I've been doing a little free-lancing, hunting Phlegmen alone down in the sewers.

Thanks for your thoughtful gift, by the way." He hefted the Shield of the Silent Knight. "Got jumped by one of their sorcerers and a few of his cronies - but his getting sealed kind of spoiled any plans they might have had.

Finally came back up, only to get shaken down for not having a permit. Since when...oh, never mind.

Slipped in here to dodge that Watchman, in case he came back around. Complete accident running into you all again - but I'm glad it happened."

He smiled - then frowned.

"Say - these recent happenings - they wouldn't have anything to do with Fort Bonaparte, would they?"

Throlar had been planning to ignore the ignominious fool sitting at the bar, their last encounter had shown the dwarf that the individual before him was extremely immature and hardly worth consideration, however his remarks about roots suddenly brought to mind a line from the message Byblos had sent.

'A dark seed planted beneath the sun,' he thought, 'there's no way in hell this is a coincidence.'

"Like hell it does," he said in response to the knight's last question, "Don't you read the news? All the houses have been destabilized or disbanded, and now we have this in their place!" he said, throwing down his copy of the Herald on the counter in front of Lind.

"And now due to an unpleasant altercation with this new council the entire remaining membership of Heroica, including us and the remaining modern Veterans, are on the run from them. Now tell me, where did you find these roots? How many of them were there and how widespread did they seem to be?"

What he says is true.  WE are outcast from the hall, turned to criminals by those who claim to be our founders.  We search for knowledge of the missing founder.  It may be unsafe for. known member of the hall to be alone in the city.    Our Path leads us to the Tritech company.  If you would join us, take note of the gift I sent you.

"You took to heart what I told you. Good. I'm not like most people here. I believe in second chances, and I believe you may be of use to me." Karie peers around, grabbing a copy of the Herald and scribbling on it. She rips it and hands it to Lind. "This address is a very important residence, in that it's mine. It's where my family is in Eubric. I need you to tell my husband that I am safe, and that there's no need to fret. Tell him to keep the door locked and disown me, if he has to. If you tell him I sent you, he should believe you, but if he doesn't, tell him that happiness lives in a quiet world. He'll hopefully understand." 

"Think you can do this for me, Lind?"

"As I just said, they were all down in the sewers."

He took a breath. You've changed, remember? You can handle this cheerfully.

In a more conciliatory tone, he continued, "I've no idea how many of them there are down there. Hundreds, probably. No idea how widespread - I was hunting Phlegmen, not mapping out strange root systems. But the sections of tunnel they were sealing off were gigantic - completely blocked off from the rest of the sewer."

He scanned the newspaper. "You got to be kidding me...

All of the houses...all?

Holy cow...

The Founders have returned...well, that could be worse, I suppose...

And that explains why the Town Watch is going crazy... Huh."

He frowned. "Wait. If the Bonapartes have flounced off to the Crystal Sea, then who's running Fort Bonaparte?"

He returned to scanning the pages. "Tiamateus's death...horrible, but no more honorable way for a hero to go out than...WAIT.

We're heroes. We don't die...how is a VETERAN dying?!"

Which founder is that? The article's listing several as missing...

Tritech...good people. Never worked with them, but they were always close with the Ji Pei...my sort of people.

"Well, I can definitely get there, and there's no one I'd rather help...but I'd have to scamper pretty fast - or you all walk pretty slow - to make it there and then catch up with you all again at Tritech..."

He frowned, as if something very important had struck him, and he scanned any of the heroes that had come downstairs.

"And if Fort Bonaparte's tied up in this in any way, there may be good reason for me to come with you all, beyond just the obvious...

Especially if I'm the only Crescent Unioner here..."

Change that to I'd have to go at the speed of light to make it there and back, if (Tritech) is only a block away.

Lind's lack of geography strikes once again...while a test of his senses of duty - and maturity - is imminent. Look out for the best interests of the Houses he's tried to loyally serve...or aid a friend(one of his only!) in need...

"The Nornalis is gone, we don't know if it's in the possession of the enemy or has simply disappeared entirely. As for who's running Fort Bonaparte, or 'Fort Freedom' rather, to the best of our knowledge it's some council of sailors and whatnot. Nautical types, I don't know, the sea has never been my thing. I always get seasick every bloody time..."

"Not you specifically, though you can be if you want to."

"Well, if you take a look at the front page of the Herald you'll notice one of the founders is conspicuously absent from the group photo at the front. Can you guess which one?"

Last I saw of you you were completely blitzed out of your mind while wearing a stupid looking hat and fake elf ears and speaking in the most grossly exaggerated Charisian accent imaginable. You were also calling yourself by some stupid fake name as I recall. How do we know you can be trusted to behave in a rational manner? Or behave at all for that matter? For all we know you might just run off halfway through and get yourself killed."

Throlar was somewhat surprised by his own words, he wasn't used to someone else being a potential liability. It felt like he was having an out-of-body experience of some sort.

"Let me make something very clear. I understand if you wish to come with us instead of checking on my family. I do not oppose that, the more help we can get the better.

If I so much as get a whiff that you want to support any bloody union or alliance, you can kiss any support you receive from me goodbye. The Crescent Union is what got us here in the first place, and I fully intend to ensure that a bickering house feud does not become a reality again in this city." Karie loosens her grip on Lind's arm. She questioned if Lind would be a liability or not, but from here on out beggars couldn't be choosers for support.

"There's more at play here than just a house feud, Lind. I have reason to believe this city's in grave peril, and not just from the Founders. Demons, heroes cloying for power, it's all starting to unravel like the tangled knot this city's become. The Crescent Union is gone, Lind. The Shadeux, the Guild of Invision, and the Ji Pei are all but gone. I need you to put your faith not in some concept of a king, but in restoring Heroica so we can ensure that Eubric does not devolve into anarchy once this is over. 

Do I have your support, Lind? Or are we going to have a problem?"

Throlar watched what was happening with a palpable sense of unease. While on some level he understood and sympathized with her sentiment he felt that Karie was being far too aggressive about this. The sudden change in demeanor at the mention of Lind's political leanings disturbed him. And besides...

"No support for any unions or alliances? Karie, you're working with someone who is openly supporting the Wolfgang!" he motioned to Kiray, "Adding to that, you willingly went along with her plan to ally with them! Say it's an alliance of convenience all you want, but we've still basically declared our support for his cause! Or do you think that Ulric's ambitions to become king of Eubric have spontaneously vanished because we now have a common enemy?"

Karie turned to Throlar, letting go of Lind in the process. She stays in her seat and swirls her wine.

"Ulric's ambitions to become king have not gone unnoticed by me. Ulric won't see the crown, either, Throlar, but if I'm being honest with myself, out of all the people cloying for the as of yet established throne, he's the one with the most sense. My plan is to negotiate with him once we have Heroica reestablished. We'll get everyone to a negotiation table who still genuinely cares about this city, and we'll figure out what happens next. After that point, I want Ulric out of the city. Killing him at this point would be political suicide.

And I'm not against any union or alliance, simply the two that dragged us into this situation. Although the Tritech Organization was Ji Pei backed, with them out of the city, hopefully we can come to some sort of arrangement. 

The Wolfgang are a problem, and they will be dealt with, but I've made a promise to Ulric that we would ensure his protection if he saw to ours, and I intend to keep my end of the bargain, as much as it pains me to do so. I do not think Ulric to back down from this deal, but if he does... I'll gut him myself."

Karie took a long drink from her alcoholic beverage, finishing it off. "We need to get going."

"Great, there goes the last perk of working for Heroica..." He looked down at his arms. "I thought I was feeling wierdly mortal.

Council of sailors, huh? Strange...I heard pretty recently that it had become a prison."

"Keep in mind...I was, as you say, blitzed out of my mind.

Group of friends convinced me to have some drinks to celebrate my returning to Eubric...and then I made the mistake of re-classing while drunk. All of a sudden, the idea of putting on a ridiculous costume that looked nothing like my old self seemed like a brilliant idea if I was going to camouflage as an Assassin...and while I was at it, why not a flamboyant new name, as well?

Don't ever re-class when you're drunk."

He shook his head. "That's why I stick to water...and Falana, when I can get it."

The knight frowned, opened his mouth...and then closed it again.

"...You have my support.

...The Crescent Union was more than just a bunch of people vying to be king. We really wanted to fix this town - help these people.

But...with its collapse, it looks like throwing in with you lot is the only way towards that goal."

He saluted.

"But until I see more proof of their corruption than rumors in a newspaper - I'm not going to throw the Shadeaux under the wagon. As houses went, they were decent people - this doesn't seem like them."

Throlar watched what was happening with a palpable sense of unease. While on some level he understood and sympathized with her sentiment he felt that Karie was being far too aggressive about this. The sudden change in demeanor at the mention of Lind's political leanings disturbed him. And besides...

"No support for any unions or alliances? Karie, you're working with someone who is openly supporting the Wolfgang!" he motioned to Kiray, "Adding to that, you willingly went along with her plan to ally with them! Say it's an alliance of convenience all you want, but we've still basically declared our support for his cause! Or do you think that Ulric's ambitions to become king of Eubric have spontaneously vanished because we now have a common enemy?"

Lind frowned. "I'll ally with you, Karie, but I'm not allying with the Wolfgang. And I'm sure as heck not going to support Ulric for king."

Karie took a long drink from her alcoholic beverage, finishing it off. "We need to get going."

"I'll do my part to keep your bargain...but I can't say I'm a huge fan."

He nodded. "Let's roll."

OoC: WBD, when you transfer Lind's stats over, could you have him equip the Shield of the Silent Knight (Shield, SP:8, attackers have a 50% chance of being Sealed), and be wearing his Crescent Seal (+2 Power, +1 Free item usage during the first round of battle)?

(Also if you could correct his age, so he's...*thinks* two years older? (Man, it's been forever since I played...) that would be awesome.)

Kiray's eyes narrow at being called out by the others, but she lets it slide. "I've dealt with TriTech before, they're decent people, at least those I met. If Ji Pei is out, hopefully it will be easier. Alliances naturally form and break, and whether Ulric still wants to become king is secondary to the threat we're dealing with, but I think we all know that."

Karie noted that some of the vocal supporters of the Wolfgang seemed to grow uneasy around her. She drew in a deep breath, exhaling sharply. She felt nervous enough juggling several factions off each other.

"I've got nothing against those who support the Wolfgang. You've got your reasons. I won't hold it against you. 

When I say the Wolfgang will be dealt with, my intention is to dissolve the Wolfgang peacefully. You won't get that kind of action from the Sungold Alliance or the Crescent Union." Karie points out before heading for the door. "We've dawdled here long enough. How about we head to the Tritech company. Lind, I'll get you caught up on what's going on."

They're the ones who came up with this whole 'king of Eubric' idea, everyone else was just copying them. He turned to speak to Kiray "Here, you should probably take the Skull Mask now, unless someone else wants it. While I'm at it, either you or Skrall should take my Shattering Arrows as you're the only people here who can use them."

Regardless of his companions' responses, Throlar was ready to leave for the Tritech Company's headquarters.

The party heads off through the streets of Eubric, thankfully the Ji Pei palace being only a block away and the Tritech Company adjacent, they didn't have any issue navigating the way undetected by any patrolling guards. Upon knocking at the door of the Tritech Company they are quickly led inside to the main laboratory. The lab has several staff who are hurriedly packing components and equipment into giant crates, Lead Engineer Monalisa Gioconda greets the heroes.

 

"Well this is quite the surprise, didn't think most of you lot were sticking your heads above ground these days!"
