Davidz90 Posted January 17, 2018 Posted January 17, 2018 The extension of deadline gave me enough time to tinker with pullback-powered clock. This is not meant to be a direct competition to the awesome clock by Didumos69, rather just a little exercise in efficiency - there are no hands except a tiny seconds hand, pendulum is very light etc. The current authonomy is 90-100 minutes. Are 3rd party metal nuts used in pendulum ok for an entry? Quote
Lipko Posted January 17, 2018 Posted January 17, 2018 That looks awesome! To be honest, this beats Didumos' model with a tiny bit for me. So much for aesthetics vs function Quote
Aventador2004 Posted January 17, 2018 Posted January 17, 2018 Sadly, in the rules it says no 3rd party items, so you need to take out the nut. Other than that, I love it. Quote
Void_S Posted January 17, 2018 Posted January 17, 2018 (edited) Well, you may add few tires or a heavy brick (73090b) used in trains or ships. I would be very sad to have this amazing creature disqualified. Edited January 17, 2018 by Void_S Added a part num Quote

Thanks! I'll see what I can do to substitute the nuts. Unfortunately, I don't have heavy brick, but the metal parts are not that heavy after all - its just a matter of fitting the weight in the lower part of the pendulum - there is not much space there. Didumos69 Posted January 17, 2018 Posted January 17, 2018 (edited) Cool! Your escapement is much more efficient than mine! I suppose there won't be much torque left to drive more hands, but this is a piece of art in itself. How much does the nut weigh? I guess max 10gr. You could use 6 of these (click to go to Bricklink) inserted in a pair of belt wheels on each end of the pendulum. They weigh 1.82gr each and are available for 15 euro cents on Bricklink in Germany. I have only four of them (EDIT the assembly below weighs 8gr, with 6 metal pins and 12 half bushes it will be 14gr or more): Edited January 17, 2018 by Didumos69 Quote
Davidz90 Posted January 17, 2018 Author Posted January 17, 2018 Turns out, small lego tires was all I needed. All thanks to the pendulum suspension - with simple axle this would be totally unworkable. Additionally, I could increase the gear ratio between pullback motor and clock, potentially pushing the authonomy to 3 hours - but now I have to work out some small reliability problems. Quote
BrickbyBrickTechnic Posted January 17, 2018 Posted January 17, 2018 Awesome! Could you make the clock hand bigger or more apparent? Quote

I'm planning to add minutes hand (hours hand seems a bit pointless with ~3 hour working time) and then I'll see how much spare power I have for bigger hands (we're talking about microwatts here ). ludov Posted January 20, 2018 Posted January 20, 2018 (edited) This is awesome, I love it! 3 hours is insane! How accurate is it? How is the pendulum suspended if it's not just a simple axle? I see it now, with those bionicle teeth thingies. Edited January 20, 2018 by Ludo Visser Quote

Due to additional load, I had to revert to smaller gear ratio, with about 100 minutes of running time. Accuracy is about 5 seconds per hour. Quote
ludov Posted January 21, 2018 Posted January 21, 2018 I'm not convinced of the clock face, it detracts a bit of the technical awesomeness... But cool entry anyway! 35 minutes ago, Davidz90 said: This is my final entry You might want to put your submission post in the entry topic instead of the information topic Quote
