voxel Posted February 27, 2008 Posted February 27, 2008 Hi all! What other kinds of construction toys do you have besides LEGO? Or does it have to be LEGO, LEGO, and LEGO only? What did you have as a child? As a kid, I also enjoyed building with Fischer Technic. However, at the beginning of my Dark Ages, this and LEGO were shelved away (or, uhm, sold ...). I had to turn 30 to come back to LEGO (in the meantime several more years have passed), and along with it came an entire realm of stuff that did not exist during my childhood. The reason is that, aside from LEGO, I am a real sucker for geometric construction toys that allow for polyhedron resp. polytope construction. Thus I also have Geomag (not the girlie stuff currently featured on that web page), Supermag (similar to Geomag but with sheres & bars in different sizes resp. lengths), and Polydron (and some other stuff). Im am currently contemplating to get zometool for more refined polydron construction (and of coure, I have worked with cardboard and other crafts material, already during my Dark Ages). Quote
Caffeine Posted February 27, 2008 Posted February 27, 2008 Erector. Whooooo. Geomag is cool too. Quote
AgentRick Posted February 28, 2008 Posted February 28, 2008 Just gotta go with Rokenbok, it's compatible with Lego X-D . And nobody say what I think they're saying, it's not a clone brick X-O . Quote
Ricecracker Posted February 28, 2008 Posted February 28, 2008 Just gotta go with Rokenbok definately for 2-3 years before i was into Lego as a hardcore fan i collected a huge amount of Rokenbok. it was so fun....... Quote
JINZONINGEN73 Posted February 28, 2008 Posted February 28, 2008 Well, while my brother got his classic Space sets from Lego, my parents, as usual, got me some poopy clones. I tried out "Tente"... their bricks were very hard, sharp-edged and HIGHLY prone to breaking into sharper pieces. Worse, their antenna elements were ALSO sharp, especially when the fragile limbs of the antenna broke off. Everything about them was designed to draw blood on me. Tried some knockoff glow in the dark bricks around 1998. Plastic was too mushy, colors too inconsistent from one brick to the next. Tried Megablocks around 2000, found their quality prone to instant breakage along with inconsistent dimensions to identical parts. Needless to say, I finally went to buying some Lego of my own and, well... Quote
zero1312 Posted February 28, 2008 Posted February 28, 2008 (edited) I tried Megabloks, too! Nothing to great but I love their new posable minifigs, something LEGO should consider for older collectors. ;-) Other than that I used to play with Fischer Technic, too. SlyOwl Posted February 28, 2008 Posted February 28, 2008 I used to be a big fan of K'NEX, before Lego took over its 30% share. Meccano had its moments, but never really took off. 8- Quote
LordGalewind Posted February 29, 2008 Posted February 29, 2008 I had tried magablocks as a kid, and as many of you have found out the pieces are constantly breaking and they don't always fit well, but what finally made me drop them was the crappy creations that resembled nothing like a brick... I can't believe its not a brick! K'nex I had found more compelling, this is something I like for you can construct larger things out of it. Seeing the success of lego, they've gone brick and made their own lego style of construction :-/ Definitely one of my favorites of any thing building is Wrebbit's Puzz 3D. Although you could argue its not construction, its still building, things such as cars and famous landmarks, and makes for some badass results... Quote
