I wanted  to build a gearbox that wasn't efficient, small or reliable, but based on gearboxes used in real cars.

The always present problem is the lack of different sized clutch-gears in LEGO Technic. So the main difference is an idler gear-stage needed to generate the different ratios.

The build is quite messy and unstable and it lacks any kinematics for a gear knob. As this was only planned as a proof of concept it's enough for me :

The gear ratios are:

1st: 1:3 (0,33)

2nd: 3:5 (0,6)

3rd: 1:1 (1,0)

4th: 5:3 (1,67)

5th: 3:1 (3,0)

Rev: 8:15 (0,53)

The ratio of reverse is between 1st and 2nd gear, just like in real life. The absolute values are not.

Here's a picture of only the gears with each gear ratio colored (Input on the left):

I enjoy those small builds without care for good design, only to represent mechanical concepts. This way i have the joy of technic, without the hassle of a huge build that usually accompanies mechanical complexity :classic:

Nicely done! I am always in favor of reallife over "LEGO standards", and this is some really good engineering taking LEGO limitations into consideration. Wouldn't be surprised if this finds its way in a car MOC some time from now...

An educational MOC with realistic car details would actually be a great idea.

But for now, it's getting disassembled, i need the room

Reminds me my own unfinished gearbox. Same thoughts, same lack of gear shifting mechanism) I tried to make it as small as possible. It's somewhat better than typical gearbox built from LEGO because it doesn't generate a lot of friction.
