Hello, this might seem like a daft question, but obviously bricks are designed to stack, plates to go on top of plates and so on.  I believe though that you could, for example, put a plate at ninety degrees to another plate and have it sit between the stud rows.  Is that considered a, well, legitimate building method if it were of use?  Would it be frowned upon by the MOC community?  I'm rather new to all this!

It was used by LEGO in the 1980s (eg in set 375) and is known as the pony ears technique (after where it was used). I think it had gone out of favour (by them) but they have started doing similar things again recently. MOC'ers often don't care as much, often connecting bricks or plates in less than LEGO legal ways.
