darkhorse00 Posted March 23, 2017 Posted March 23, 2017 (edited) Missed out on the Lego Emerald Night. I reckon that I should build my own steam locomotive instead of getting one on the market. After few months of bricks purchases, precious advice from fellow Eurobrick members(e.g. Motor power functions Torgue, learned about quartering technique), and several rounds of reworks and modification, it is finally completed! Sharing my 8-wide build Santa Fe 4-4-2 "Atlantic" Locomotive, with Cargo Wagon and Passenger Car. Hope you guys like it! Train: Santa Fe 4-4-2 "Atlantic" Locomotive Specs: Engine [8-Wide]. Tender [7-wide], Cargo Wagon [8-wide], Passenger Car [8-wide] Power functions: 1 x XL-Motor, 1 x Power Function Light (Front Lamp and Rear Boiler), 1 x AAA Battery Pack, 1 x IR Receiver, 1 x Extension Wire This is the one of the only few photos of ATSF which I can find for reference during my build: Edited March 23, 2017 by darkhorse00 Quote
zephyr1934 Posted March 23, 2017 Posted March 23, 2017 Great job capturing the look and feel of the locomotive, you really nailed the era. Lots of great little details too (the "fire" in the firebox is a fantastic touch). The luggage rack in the passenger car is brilliant too. Quote
ColletArrow Posted March 23, 2017 Posted March 23, 2017 Simply beautiful. I like the lights everywhere, although perhaps the headlamp needs a yellow lens on it to take some of the harsh, blue hue out of it. The freight wagon looks excellent, but I feel the coaches are a little over-balanced; the body feels too big, or the bogies too small relative to each other. It has an excellent interior, however. Good job all round. Quote
xboxtravis7992 Posted March 23, 2017 Posted March 23, 2017 The locomotive has some great details with the light up firebox. The boiler jacketing looks a bit bland, maybe there is a way to add some piping to it? I am not a fan of the coach exterior, it looks not so much like a period American coach but something more European like what the EN had. (While I don't take Bachmann as a highly accurate model maker, this HO set of theirs shows what I mean with the exterior: http://shop.bachmanntrains.com/images/13703.jpg) But on the other hand that coach interior, whoa! The interior job on that coach nailed it, and is some of the best coach detailing I have seen on the interior of a Lego model. Quote
Nemo57 Posted March 23, 2017 Posted March 23, 2017 Great job. Very very close to the original. Great solutions. Quote
LEGO Train 12 Volts Posted March 23, 2017 Posted March 23, 2017 Very nice locomotive ...I really like your great design! I suggest just one (and not two) pair of o-rings to increase the speed! Top notch work! Quote

There are a pair of LED lights from the Lego power functions. I do not want keep the other light out of sight, so I route it to the rear to light up the firebox. :) Thank you for the nice comments! 9 hours ago, ColletArrow said: Simply beautiful. In any case, it was really hard to find the suitable size o-rings at the place I live...Those are just red rubber bands which fits well too. Black/darker colours would be perfect though. 8 hours ago, xboxtravis7992 said: The locomotive has some great details with the light up firebox. Yes, will do reworks on the boiler jacketing once i have the ideas. Good point there. As for the coach, it was built up as reference to the LNER. You are right, an American Engine shoudn't be pulling a UK coach in reality. Haha. Well, it was made as I have lot of extra reddish brown plates, and internet search came up with this LNER picture. Will probably do a better one in the future. :) Quote
xboxtravis7992 Posted March 24, 2017 Posted March 24, 2017 Well keep the LNER coach then, and just use it for when you build a British steamer! Now that I see what source material you were going for, it seems you got the look down pretty well. Quote
marbleman Posted March 24, 2017 Posted March 24, 2017 Good work! Beautiful and neat. Very impressive you put the XL Motor into boiler, that is what I trying to do all the time in my work. And I also like the way you make the yellow line outside the coach. Hope to see the video for running. Quote
knotian Posted March 24, 2017 Posted March 24, 2017 One basic question please. What is the part number and name for the curved sections of the engine boiler? I need to build some large round towers and these should do the trick. Thanks, Ed Quote

Thanks, Ed It is made of part number is 88930, Slope, Curved 2 x 4 x 2/3 No Studs with Bottom Tubes, if this is the part you are refering to. Quote
knotian Posted March 24, 2017 Posted March 24, 2017 Thank you very much. I should have checked the scale - I thought you used some sort of 1/4 cylinder that I couldn't find Ed Quote
22kane Posted March 25, 2017 Posted March 25, 2017 Really nice work. The passenger car has great classic look to it and I especially like the interior. Also, the way you built the coal in the tender is really cool. Awesome job! Quote
Man with a hat Posted March 26, 2017 Posted March 26, 2017 Great job. The locomotive is absolutely gorgeous. And the passenger car is great as well. Quote
Feuer Zug Posted March 27, 2017 Posted March 27, 2017 Nice work. Your Atlantic looks great, love the passenger car, and the boxcar is pretty good too. Quote

BurkusCircus Posted March 27, 2017 Posted March 27, 2017 Wow, beautiful moc. This brings back memories of my first train-A Lionel NYC Atlantic. Real nice set. Have a set like it and run it occasionally. Atlantics are beautiful engines. Nice passenger car too. Quote
ecmo47 Posted March 28, 2017 Posted March 28, 2017 (edited) It's always nice to see new a new steam locomotive MOC. Nice job! Have you thought about using some of the Big Ben custom wheels? I think that some bigger drivers would evoke that "high-stepping" look of the prototype. Also, is it possible to drop the valve gear down some? It's seem a little too high. Overall - great work! I especially enjoyed the lighting and high quality photos. Edited March 29, 2017 by ecmo47 Quote
