theycallmemrdarko Posted January 6, 2017 Posted January 6, 2017 My first modular was the Detective's Office just a few months ago and I found the Barber shop to be a bit cramped. So I wanted to try and do a 16 wide standalone barber/apartments and I think the result came our pretty nice. This is my first post on EB so please let me know if I need to edit anything. Album can be found here: http://imgur.com/a/LE6Y5 Hope you guys enjoy! Darko Quote
LegoSjaak Posted January 6, 2017 Posted January 6, 2017 Nice to see it as a stand alone! What did you do with the detective office? Quote

That is next on my project list. I just got back into Lego in September after 20 years so this was my real first big mod. Trying to decide if I want to do a 16 wide Highlander/Detective's office or push to 22 and have a 10 stud wide outdoor patio/firepit area off the side of Highlander. Quote
fordtruckin Posted January 6, 2017 Posted January 6, 2017 Awesome mod! If I had an extra Detective's Office I would attempt to mod it, but I only have 1 and I really like it as it is. Quote

I would go for your second option, as that is more attractrive to see and offers more own input! Quote

I figure I can always put it back together at some point but I just came out of my dark ages so I'm trying to experiment as much as possible with whatever pieces I have plus the few brinklink orders I've placed so far. 1 hour ago, LegoSjaak said: I would go for your second option, as that is more attractrive to see and offers more own input! The more I think about it that's probably the route I'll go. I can try and customize a bit more with the wider footprint since the original Highlander is already 16 studs wide. Quote
TheLegoDr Posted January 6, 2017 Posted January 6, 2017 Overall it works quite well. It looks very similar to the original building, which it was a well designed looking building (other than the weird reddish brown part). I've thought about making mine stand alone also. Although I think I will change it up a bit of course. Does yours have stairs anywhere? I'll have to look at that other link you put up there to see more. As for the Detective office, I agree about adding in the side area. I have a Corner Deli modular build going that has a little eating area outside. It looks neat enough. It adds something different too. The only downside is the lack of visual space above the eating area since it won't be a full size building then. Quote

Thanks, my first thought was to just imagine if someone stretched the Barber shop out to 16 studs, what that would look like so that's a big part of why it still retains most of the exterior styling. I did add stairs to the backside for the apartment, i'm not super happy with the execution but that's just something I'll get more familiar with as I keep building. I'm still figuring this EB thing out so next time I'll try and embed more pictures directly into the post. I'm thinking I may try and make an L shaped building that wraps around the back so the patio sits on the front right 1/4 of the baseplate and will still retain some of the height. Thinking similar to the right side of Assembly square but replace the fountain with an eating area. Quote
koalayummies Posted January 6, 2017 Posted January 6, 2017 Santa doesn't need a haircut! Great mod/moc, the back looks great with the 1x1 round tiling, staircase and additional flower planters. The bedroom tiling is pretty too. Nice work. Quote
TheLegoDr Posted January 6, 2017 Posted January 6, 2017 Good idea. The L shaped building should work well. I had that thought too. I was torn between having zero building there vs a blank wall (depending on width). I am still in progress of my build, so I haven't officially decided what to do. Can't wait to see yours. Quote
