Hey guys, as an AFOL, my main genera has always been science fiction and fantasy. What can I say, I love them both to bits but there comes a point in life where I want to expand my horizon with Lego. I see a lot of neat creations here other than the realm of sci fi but its also overwhelming because its out of my comfort zone. I am willing to try something new but not sure what. My second love has always been fast cars but can't build them from scratch, at least not with out instructions. I've used to collect the Lego Ferrari series back in the day too. Its always been that or star wars lol. Any pointers would be helpful, i am clueless as to what to do because i am getting back into building after Christmas. My winter vacation from college has just begun and i need something to keep me occupied. Does anyone else feel the same way when it comes to trying something new with Lego?

You could try and reverse build some of the great MOCs displayed on the forum. This really used to help me with a few things back in the day, though I always gave my models my own touch instead of making 100% copies. Though I'm now at a point where I believe I can build anything, except elaborate technical stuff. Good luck on your quest!

Another great thing to try is to get a picture of something you want to build, a car or a building or anything really. Then just go for it with replicating it in bricks. Use any colours if the part fits, don't worry if you have to backtrack and take parts off/out. You can recreate the shape and then concern yourself with the colour-scheme, how sturdy it is etc.

First thing is figure out what you want to try.  Do some research and go for it.  That's my methodology.

LEGO has building instructions online. I look through them to get some ideas of building styles and techniques of something I want to try.

Thanks for the ideas guys, I do some of those things too but always give the creator credit. I agree, building Instructions are also a big help when trying to modify a model or build something new.

I often look at the creations of others and try to recreate them. I'm bad at it. Even given a parts list I sometimes can't figure out what they did. I can create something that looks similar. Granted I've stuck mostly to fantasy and science fiction. Recently I've built lots of unicorns. I'm attempting to build a unicorn calendar for my wife. It won't be as good as the creations found here. Partially due to how quickly I'm trying to put it together. Partially due to the fact that I don't have enough skill and bricks to make really good scenes.
