Ayrlego Posted December 8, 2016 Posted December 8, 2016 After leaving Mooreton Bay on his voyage of discovery to the west, Major Dirk Allcock makes a brief stop in the Corlander settlement of Stormhaven. His visit is to pay his respects to the mayor, Jack Bain, satisfy his curiosity regarding the island (Serentia was his intended destination before he was asked to supervise the settlement of Alicentia) and visit one of his business investments, a medium artesian which was producing quality head wear for the discerning gentlemen. As you may well recall, Stormhaven is unique in that it is situated in a mangrove tidal flat and buildings are built on stilts and connected by boardwalks. A few months ago, Dirk was approached by a women named Martha Harris. Mrs Harris was a widow who wanted to settle in Stormhaven to be close to her son, who served their as a minor civil servant in the administration. She wished to buy a plot of land and set up a hattery to fund her self. Thus Dirk provided the capital, and now he is here to see his investment first hand. The widow Harris already has gained a formidable reputation, producing quality hats and even winning the contract to supply Corlander troops in the region with replacement tricornes. To keep up with the demand, she now has three ladies working for her. Here she can be seen greeting Dirk at the front door of her establishment. Licensed as a medium artesian in Stormhaven. Well, it's been a while in the making, but I finally have finished (sort off) my Stormhaven project (I had planned an interior, but didn't actually finish it - I ran out of tan bricks!). I had ordered the mangrove parts for the Stormhaven minichallenge, but they arrived slightly too late to submit anything. I've tried to match the style set by Mike S in his settlement - Hopefully this should blend in well! Also a smaller version of his and Gideon's mangroves. The slanted panel technique I found on Flickr here. Anyway I really like this build, I think it's probably one of my better ones! Hopefully you agree! C&C are always welcome! Quote
DangAndBlast Posted December 8, 2016 Posted December 8, 2016 That's beautiful! Remarkably realistic. Quote
Capt Wolf Posted December 8, 2016 Posted December 8, 2016 Stunning! Love it! The siding, the roof, the water, the mangroves, everything. And I've been searching for a good way to do that angled siding effect. Now I know. Thank you! Quote
Garmadon Posted December 8, 2016 Posted December 8, 2016 Lovely work, Ayrlego, the colors are spot on, and those roof and siding techniques work perfectly with the woodwork and mangrove swamp! A few of my favorite details are the lantern, the half plate offsets on the boardwalk, and the light tan used under the water. Altogether an excellent job! Quote
Puvel Posted December 8, 2016 Posted December 8, 2016 Gorgeous build indeed! The panelling and roof work really well together. The little platform looks amazing. Great job on the water and mangroves as well Quote
Kai NRG Posted December 8, 2016 Posted December 8, 2016 Great build ayrlego, the siding looks great and the mangroves and water is awesome! I really like that roof style too, but it looks maybe a little too regular - a few discolored tiles, or maybe a chimney sticking up, or a few leaves on it, might make it feel more real? The gutter pipe is a great touch though and the porches are really well done! Quote
Slegengr Posted December 8, 2016 Posted December 8, 2016 Very interesting building, Ayrlego! The siding and roof tile technique are both well done and quite realistic! I agree with Kai that a chimney, some foliage, or some color variation might make the roof appear even more realistic. The mangroves are interesting as well. The balcony is a nice addition. The gaps in the boardwalk give a realistic appearance as well. Is that achieved using headlight bricks? Is there a backside or interior to this build? More views would be nice if so. Quote
Mike S Posted December 8, 2016 Posted December 8, 2016 Beautiful and it fits perfectly in Stormhaven's style! Quote
Elostirion Posted December 8, 2016 Posted December 8, 2016 (edited) I guess I mention it every time, but I love the style and the coherence and consistency of all the MOCs for Stormhaven. I particularly love the veranda and the angled facade for that one. Fantastic. Edited December 10, 2016 by Elostirion Quote
blackdeathgr Posted December 8, 2016 Posted December 8, 2016 Whoooa! This build has completely taken me by surprise! It is indeed stunning and definitely one of your best so far regarding BoBS! Also a huge thanks for revealing us the technique behind those lovely walls. Quote
Kwatchi Posted December 9, 2016 Posted December 9, 2016 I see you've discovered the joys of building in Stormhaven too, Ayrlego. Mike S' overall artistic vision for his colony is the best in BoBS and your contribution is melds with that. And I find your build's colour and ordered planking invokes a sense of cane weave/wicker which I feel is perfect for this. A hearty well done from me. Quote
Gunman Posted December 9, 2016 Posted December 9, 2016 What a lovely, clean build man. Being angled is also nice... and the dark tan roof is amazing. Quote
Ayrlego Posted December 12, 2016 Author Posted December 12, 2016 Thank you all for the comments everyone! As mentioned above this one has been in the works for a while, I started around two months ago and took my time. I really think it has paid off as it is probably one of my favourite builds so far, and I deeply appreciate you guys taking the time to comment! Also, if Flickr is anything to go by, I'm not the only one who thinks it's one of my best, as it is only my second build ever to get over 100 favs! So all in all I'm pretty stoked although a little daunted as now I feel I've set some kind of bar!!! On 12/9/2016 at 1:00 AM, Slegengr said: Very interesting building, Ayrlego! I'd seen the technique used somewhere on Flickr, for fences I think, but couldn't refind it for proper credit. Below is a picture of how it works if you are interested. Unfortunately I ran out of bricks for an interior. The ground floor was almost finished. I had work benches and a storage space for the hats. The upper floor is a blank space! Thanks Kwatchi, I agree regarding @Mike S's artistic vision - I think the reason I spent so long on this trying to get it just right was to attempt to create something worthy of that unique vision! Kolonialbeamter Posted December 13, 2016 Posted December 13, 2016 There's nothing I could say that hasn't already been said about this marvelous MOC. But I still want add my name to the long list of admirers. So I'm just gonna go Quote
