Richard Dower Posted November 22, 2016 Posted November 22, 2016 big fan of Sariel's work, but it would be nice for those who missed out to see speed builds and reviews of old classics such as 41999, 8466, 8275, 8285, 8455, 8457, 8458, 8448, 8462, 8479, 8480 and finally the classic 8880. maybe someone could send him the sets if he dosent have them? Sariel Posted November 22, 2016 Posted November 22, 2016 Thanks, I own about a half of these in the sense that they are all taken apart and the pieces are mixed with my other pieces. That makes reviewing them pretty hard as I no longer have boxes nor instructions and would need to find all the pieces somehow. The essential problem is that I lack the budget to buy these sets and the classic sets I've reviewed so far came nowhere close to covering the expenses with YouTube revenue. I've spent about $500 on 8868 and 5571, two really widely recognized sets, and the two resulting videos, which took a lot of work, have less than 70,000 views between them. So I'm losing money here, money I don't have, and borrowing sets from someone seems very challenging logistically. So for the time being, I can't see this happening. Quote
rm8 Posted November 22, 2016 Posted November 22, 2016 (edited) There is a way to make it cheaper for Sariel, If viewers help to make full/partial funding of such sets to review. Sariel can open crowdfunding and voting process in separate page in the same time. Then, after reaching planned summ, Pavel will buy and review set that was voted 1st, then after reaching next point - 2nd set, and so on... this crowdfuning can be continous (without deadline) or long term (1 year period). In other hand, crowdfunding in blogospere is very thin and delicate process. Usually there are many anonimus haters, when someone ask for money, even if it is a star-blogger. Just my 5 cents. And I am ready to support this, even I don't really interested in reviewing such old sets. I have some of that sets already, but no time to build them for last 3 years... Precisely my reason against doing so. I've tried crowdfunding once, for a camera, and there were haters aplenty. Apparently the mere fact that I sometimes get free review copies of Lego sets is enough to hate my guts. I'm not sure about the logic here, maybe someone expects Lego sets to become cheaper if I don't get a copy every now and then ;) Quote
Imanol BB Posted November 22, 2016 Posted November 22, 2016 Crowdfunding would be a problem because most of the people possibly would think that it is better for them to keep that money and use it to buy their own sets, and also if the people crowdfund him, it would be like an obligation to Sariel to make the review, which is not a comfortable situation, so for me it is OK how he has been creating his reviews, taking the needed time, and most of the time using his own resources to get the sets or pieces, and i really appreciate that he takes a lot of his time to share with us most of the official sets and some of his MOCs, and another thing that we need to do is to accept that whether or not we like it, most of the old or classic sets will become more expensive with the path of time, because they will be harder to find and to get a "good condition" one, so remember that when one of these sets are reviewed, but we could help by searching for some of these sets, and we might find very cheap but well/maintained sets, and we could be the link between these sets and the reviewers, this would speed up the process of searching and also the sets could be gotten at a very low price, this solution could work, but i know that you must have better ideas and i am happy to look at them, all in all, we must help each other to reach a goal. By the way Sariel, have you ever tried to make a video with closed captions that could be edited by the people? i had the idea for this some time ago, and i thought that i could, for example, make some subtitles in Spanish, so the videos would also be seen and understood by the people who only speaks that language, and this could be done for every language, what do you think? Limga Posted November 22, 2016 Posted November 22, 2016 There are reviews of old sets done by Desert Eagle with English subtitles available, may be you will be interested in them: https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PLgIsNOjw64YvBqdLMLuJ4MdSD_vLSBzdn By the way, I have 8458 and 8480, may be one day I will make reviews and speed builds:) Quote

Yes, once, and literally nobody liked it. YT closed captions look totally different on different devices, you have no real control over their appearance, and on smaller devices they can easily take half of the screen or more. Maybe you can ask Jang or someone else to review the classic sets, they seem to operate on a much bigger budget. Me, I can usually spend like $100 - $150 on Lego monthly. Blakbird Posted November 22, 2016 Posted November 22, 2016 Many of those older sets are already covered by Technicopedia. Quote
Erik Leppen Posted November 22, 2016 Posted November 22, 2016 Reviews are for potential buyers. There are more potential buyers for sets currently in stores. For people looking to buy old sets, there's plenty of opinion and fact material all over the internet for them to make their decision. Quote

Not to say that you have them all I have once volunteer my 8462 (whit box instructions etc) to Paweł for review, and due to lack of time Sariel had to rejected my offer and I really understand his decision.
