After a 25 year absence from Legos, I recently bought the 42040 Fire Plane and now I'm hooked again. So much as changed in the Lego world and I'm confused about all the different PF versions and pieces.

My question is; should I wait until the new 2017 PF (2.0?) comes out before buying sets that included PF or is it okay to buy sets with the "older" PF like 42030 and 42043? I don't mind waiting since I can spend some time with non-PF sets like 42039, 42053, etc.

I wouldn't. First, I don't believe PF 2.0 has been confirmed, as the 2017 "Tracaked racer" set appears to have normal m motors. Secondly even if PF 2.0 is released, I dought they would change over the motors in the old sets. For example, did they change ove the peices of all the old studded sets to studless when studless was released? No. so i think you should just by now. And anyway, in thirty years when we have PF 3.0, those "OLD" PF 1.0 will be valuable collectors items. To reinforce that, look at the price of the old "Car Chassis" set on different sites. it is very expensive.

With the release of Wedo 2.0 TLG stated that future PF-Parts are compatible with Wedo 2.0. This sparked the rumor of Power Functions 2. Well then there was the rumor the porsche would have the first components. and now we have nothing new :)

I will also add that third-party controllers and adaptive electronics for LEGO motors are still more likely to produce something more valuable and functional than PF 2.0.  Which work with PF as they are now.  Look up BuWizz, or Smartbrick and you will see what I am talking about.  Using these will add power and playability and can be used with PF functions as they are now.

I see, that does clear things up a bit. Is it safe to say PF 2.0 is mostly speculation?

Yes, it is mostly speculation.

Looking at how gradually current PF system has been introduced I wouldn't expect LEGO would change the whole system in one go.

Older electric systems are still good for today - look at sough-after RC motors, micro motors, even older 9V motors are being used. Current PF system is and I think will be relevant in the future.
