News: Lego SD70ACe Model Wins Best of Show at a local festival

First off, I feel sorry I don't have pictures of it to share right now, but today I saw something really cool on Facebook. A Lego MOC of an UP SD70ACe built by Mathew Pratt (aka Tony Stark on Facebook) was entered into a model contest at the Intermountain Train Expo in Salt Lake City, Utah. It seems this contact was against traditional HO, N, and O scale models.

Due to the fact though the Lego model was %100 scratch built compared to its 'scale' cousins it was able to beat them out winning both first place in the locomotive and rolling stock competition, and it took home the award in best in show! I think this is a spectacular thing for Lego modelers. 

If you want to go check it out, Matt posted photos of the model to the Facebook group 'Utah Rail Modelers .' I don't know if he has a Flickr or Brickshelf page, so that Facebook page is the only place I know it's on.

It appears to be a closed Facebook group.   Maybe you can post a screen capture.

I'll see if I can. I'm not very skilled at resizing photos though. I'll ask the creator of the MOC if he has shared it to Flickr or Brickshelf.

You know, if you looked into ULUG, you might learn more about this MOC and its creator as he is a member. (He goes by the forum handle name "LegoTrooper" there.)  (I am not trying to gilt trip you into joining.)

Truth be known, he joined after I had left Utah. Perhaps when I do make it back I will have something to pit against it.

 

All that aside, it is great to see credit given for all the work put forth, even if the chosen medium is LEGO bricks. Perhaps it is a sign of the times and the changing demographics of the hobby.

I do have an account on the ULUG forums but I don't visit it really. I want to join officially someday; but being in college means the cost of building a portion of a Lego train layout is still rather prohibitive even with the LUG discounts. I am already spending way to much on official sets, that is why most of my serious MOCs are done in LDD so they can be done for free and the design can be saved for future building once I am done with school. To be honest to, I think if I were to join any train club right now it would be the NMRA since I have played with Lego bricks my whole life and really want to learn something 'different' such as HO modeling (not to say I am abandoning the Lego hobby, of course not! Just that I want to try that HO thing first since I have never done it. Eventually my goal is after I finally build my first HO layout, to then focus on a medium sized Lego layout before going onto a bigger HO layout). Yet I have plenty of ideas of things I want to do when I finally join a LUG, so I have an incentive to do it someday!

Of course with what I just said, I find it funny that some of the more "old school model railroaders" still view Lego as a strange addition to the rail hobby... Especially in my case as I think having grown up in Lego since I was a little kid is part of what made me interested in building stuff thus leading me to the HO hobby; and now some of the hobby press I read about for HO stuff inspires ideas for future things I can do in Lego. Go figure!
