Neko77025 Posted October 7, 2016 Posted October 7, 2016 (edited) So ... I have not owned any Legos in years. However, I have kept up with videos and other things others have built. Well I want to get back into it. Been looking at a lot of RC Technic stuff. I would really like to make A RC Jeep 4x4 or maybe A tank .. or both .. long run. and then into mindstromes Robots ect ect. However ... I have nothing as of right now. What sets should A start out with. What tips would you give someone just getting started. I was thinking LEGO Technic 42030 Remote Controlled VOLVO L350F Wheel Load .. seems like A good starting kit. It comes with alot of power functions. However I do want to get the SBricks .. so the 2x IR sensors and 2x remote might be usless.. in long run. First set ...LEGO Technic 42030 Remote Controlled VOLVO L350F Wheel Load 2nd LEGO Technic 42053 Volvo EW160E Building Kit + some smaller ones... I can spend $200 -$300 ea month for some stuff .. they dont really seem too be cheaper used .. so might as well get them new. Things that have caught my fancy are, Tanks, 4x4, Gearboxes, pneumatics ect ect .. Anyhow ... what sets would you tell someone to start with ... and any other tips that might help ? Thank You. Tommy Styrvoky Posted October 7, 2016 Posted October 7, 2016 Sets are a place good start, though If you just want to dive in and build a MOC of your choice, you could take a look around Rebrickable and you could use Bricklink to individually purchase parts of your choice. The wheel loader is a good set to start with, as it gives you one of every power functions motor, and the BWE is another good set for parts. Quote
Blakbird Posted October 7, 2016 Posted October 7, 2016 Well, Technicopedia shows every Technic set ever made, so that would be a good place to start! Quote
DTom Posted October 7, 2016 Posted October 7, 2016 42030, 8275 or 8043 (even 9398) seems good set to start for you, lots of part and motors. You can get them cheaper on ebay but you have to wait for the good deal. 42009, 42055, 42054 or 42043 are also good sets for the parts, but you have only one motor. Once you have some of those, you shouldn't miss a lot of parts for MOCs, Bricklink will then be a great help. Quote
Didumos69 Posted October 7, 2016 Posted October 7, 2016 Well, let me start with saying: Welcome back! Your story is one of many and we refer to this event as coming out of your dark ages, but maybe you already know about that. 1 hour ago, DTom said: 42030, 8275 or 8043 (even 9398) seems good set to start for you, lots of part and motors. I would suggest more or less the same; try to buy cheap sets to get a lot and a great variety of parts. If you want to get into 4x4 and SBrick stuff immediately you could also consider starting with a MOC of one of the top-designers these days, for instance Madocca1977's Baja Trophy Truck with SBrick. Anyway, whatever you do, have fun! Quote
Neko77025 Posted October 7, 2016 Author Posted October 7, 2016 Sweet, thanks guys. Yea I been looking on ebay at a few sets .... trying to get them for A good price ... none yet tho. BUt i think 42030 will be my first ... 2nd might be 9398 has some nice wheels and lego differential. Damn thing is I want them all ... Arg ... maybe if I win the lotto. Quote
nerdsforprez Posted October 7, 2016 Posted October 7, 2016 one thing that is always missed when discussing this topic is color. Sure, the Volvo loader is a great place to start, but only if you planning on building a yellow jeep or tank. as I have advanced as builder I think one of the biggest things i omitted ad I started building up my collection was color. I can build forever in black. Other colors not so much. Something to consider. Especially with all the color variation in new sets Quote
Dafgek81 Posted October 8, 2016 Posted October 8, 2016 8258 Crane truck is a great set to, lots of gears. 42009 Is a good parts supply to. 8043 Has a lot off RC stuff. Quote

Or sometimes, very, very dark grey? @Neko77025 If you're looking at RC, then you've made the right choice with 42030. But to go with the PF parts from that set I'd actually recommend 42029 or 42039 as bases to get a good idea of how suspensions, (distribution) gearboxes, bodywork, etc. are built. In your position I'd get the pickup truck first because it gives you a lot of red parts (a popular vehicle colour, particularly for supercars), and should be slightly cheaper than the Le Mans Protoype, but both are relatively easy to convert to RC. If you're looking at SBrick, the SBrick Plus Kickstarter has just gone live, but I'm not sure it helps you because even if it is cheaper you'll have to wait a few months for the Plus to be built and shipped. dr_spock Posted October 8, 2016 Posted October 8, 2016 The loader is good since it comes one of each type of PF motors (except the PF train motor). You can experiment with them and get a feel of what each one does. You can always sell off or give away the IR receiver and remote when you no longer want them. Quote
Neko77025 Posted October 8, 2016 Author Posted October 8, 2016 (edited) What about Crawler Crane Set 42042 ... seems like it has A lot of clutchs and gears .. for A good price ... Also what are the largest lego wheels ... Off road type ? Edited October 8, 2016 by Neko77025 Quote
ctx1769 Posted October 8, 2016 Posted October 8, 2016 Just looking at the shelves behind me at flagships from last 4 years and I wonder if I'm mad. I've only been out of dark ages a year but picked up the flagships in various shops :), I do have the parts for 9398 which I hope to build soon. Quote
teos Posted October 9, 2016 Posted October 9, 2016 I'm just getting back into Technic after about a decade of a dark (technic) age. I ended up building 42042 crawler crane today and it is definitely worth the price, especially if you can get it on sale like I did. This is the biggest Technic set I've built and it seems like it would be nice to tinker with. My only wish would be if it had some kind of motorized independent drive system not necessarily RC though. No complaints for $123 with tax. Quote
Neko77025 Posted October 9, 2016 Author Posted October 9, 2016 I just picked up the LEGO Technic 42030 Remote Controlled VOLVO L350F Wheel Load from Toys R Us .. Price matched Amazon for 199.99 / 216 after Tax ... was seeing it go for like 180ish after shipping ... it they were all "might have all the parts" .. fig 36.00 more for new is not that bad. However .. I am really thinking about getting the 42042 Crawler Crane Tomarrow .. its only 116 at amzon and TRU had A few of them ... but ... I really need something with some off Road wheels & Shocks Was looking at the formula off-roader 42037 ... Anyone know / can tell the size of the wheel vs the 9398 4 x 4 Crawler ? Quote
Jay Psi Posted October 9, 2016 Posted October 9, 2016 They're a bit smaller - 42037 has 43.2mm x 26mm wheels with 81.6mm x 38mm tyres, whereas 9398 has 56mm x 34mm wheels and 94.8mm x 48mm tyres. Quote
kevinb120 Posted October 9, 2016 Posted October 9, 2016 42042 is pretty cheap right now for sure. 42039 is also easy to find on discount, and gives a lot of white panels. There are also half a dozen builds out there right now for '39, if you want to get some practice it's a lot of kit for ~$100. 42037 can also be had for under $40. It's not a great set by itself, but yields more tires, panels , and suspension goodies. You can get 37/39 for under $150 now and get a pretty good base of parts for r/c car/truck builds and add from there, rather then paying stupid money for an older "collectable" kit with older parts. And 42 on sale yields some power functions and a ton of gears and tracks for less then 10 cents a piece. Having ordered 30 already, combined with just 42 that's a heck of a lot of goodies to get started if you can live with the colors for moc projects. Quote

Lakop Posted October 10, 2016 Posted October 10, 2016 I think the crawler crane would be a good, "welcome back" set. It's a good price and should ease you back into it. My "welcome back set" was the container truck, 8052. H Quote
GBTechnic Posted October 11, 2016 Posted October 11, 2016 (edited) 42038 over 42029 is a good and cheaper option which has suspension, tracks, orange color and is very cheap these days ($65 USD on Amazon.com in USA). All you would have to do is get some tires from 42037 or Bricklink to build a 4x4 and there is already a C-Model tank out there. Having said that this assumes you only like Tanks and 4x4s. If you are at all interested in cars I would choose 42039 for roughly $102 (Amazon.com in US). It has a lot of RC potential, has a truck/SUV B-Model and quite a few C-Models that are available on Rebricable and other places. Edited October 11, 2016 by GBTechnic Quote
